I'm a 19 year old with 10 tattoos, including an arm sleeve and two leg sleeves... I have my last name in graffiti on my under left forearm, a celtic cross on my top left forearm, a Pink Floyd half sleeve covering my left bicep and shoulder, a Grateful Dead sleeve covering my right arm, leg sleeves with my grandparents portraits and roots everywhere, the four Led Zeppelin symbols on the right ribs, the Boondock Saints prayer on my left ribs, my favorite quote on across my stomache("The Sky Is The Limit"- George Jung[Cocaine Dealer]) and Jörmangandr(Norse Mythic Snake) that encirles the earth that covers my back... All of my tattoos can be covered with a long sleeve shirt and pants.
I don't regret a single tattoo on my body. They all represent things that mean a lot to me and I can truly say that I will never regret them...
Oh and just so people dont't think that I'm just some young punk with that flips burgers, I'm currently getting my degree in pharmaceutical research and development...

To Cari from the LDS-

If avoiding all those things is how you live into your 90's, I'll be happy when I die at 70.

I have my right arm sleeved and a few other tattoos scattered around (upper back, left forearm, lower left leg). I didn't get my first one until age 27. 11 years later, and no regrets, unlike what I've seen with people who get inked at 18. They all mark important events or milestones in my life.

Also, let's be honest, I like the attention, and people who say their ink (if easily visible) is strictly personal are lying. Anyone who gets readily visible tattoos does so to mark themselves as part of a particular subculture, although even that seems to be changing.

My tattoos are reminders of specific times in my life. My father is Jewish and really is against tattoos. When I see him I never wear clothes that show them. When he does see them, he just calls them "mishaps" that can be forgiven.
Dave, I don't have one on my breast, nor will I get one there. All the girls that I know that have tattoos stick with their back or arms, no boobies here!

Regarding the responses to Marcia Mason's post regarding Judaic law and all of the posts quoting Leviticus- I suggest taking a closer look at your own religious law and the laws of others. Most, and especially Leviticus, deal with health directly (whether they admit to it or not). Not eating beef or pork, for example, when both beef and pork are known for carrying disease if not prepared properly. The covering of the body for Muslim women, for another example, is interesting to think about since the concentration of Muslims is in a desert climate- and people generally cover up to protect themselves from sun exposure.

To jp,

You are right longevity is a mixture of lifestyle and heredity, but there is a third factor--environment. You example about your grandfather supports more the notion of this third factor rather than heredity. Out of the three factors, though, lifestyle is the one that you can do the most about to hopefully live longer(unless you get hit by a bus or something). :-)

BTW, another SDA in his 30's here. We don't get much PR, but it's weird, I have seen references to SDAs in several sources in the past few days, including Djuna Barnes's "Nightwood".

I have one of the invisible man. When I got it I felt as though people could not see me when in public. I felt as though I melted into the crowd. I no longer feel that way, as my self esteem has improved. However, people will see it and not know what it is. Obviously only his clothes are visible. When I tell them what it is, I also say I have him on the other arm as well, only he is naked!

Tatoo's are just one of many ways of self expression. To each his own! I have always been curious about the decision making that goes into that final body artwork. Some apparently didn't put alot of thought into it, some with no imagination and some that I have found to be totally out of this world and beautiful.

I think the most appealing tatoo I have ever seen though was on a buddy of my son's. Both of them tough marines, I might add. There for all the world to see was a small penguin wearing a pink tutu and holding a lacy pink parasol. It was cute and totally unexpected and showed that this guy was really self confident and had a great sense of humor. So sometimes the tatoo tells the story of the person wearing it.

I have three tattoos and people are shocked when they find out I have them. Everyone thinks I am conservative, which has nothing to do with tats. I am about to get my fourth. I am Christian and they are all Christian related. They are an expression of who I am.

Just a comment to the SDA person - clean living is not a necessary precursor to long life. My grandfather died in his 90's and he had black lung disease from working in a coal mine many years ago. It's a combination of heredity and living....
