It’s Reader-Submitted Quiz Week!! Today’s quiz comes from Genie L. Mata of Vancouver. We’ll be featuring quizzes suggested by readers at 5pm EST through Friday. Enjoy!
There are 21 states whose names end in the letter “a.” How many can you name in 4 minutes?
Take the Quiz: Name the States That End in “A”
Only limited by my poor typing skills! Thank you “Fifty Nifty United States” from elementary school days.

Fifty Nifty United States song saved me, too! ;)

Theeeeeere’s antimony arsenic… oh crap, wrong song.
Seriously, though, took me over a minute to get the last one. I kept dancing around it in the midwest until I got it.

Is there anyone who can quickly recite the names of all the states who *doesn’t* know that song? (Not me, I used the song.) The hardest thing was remembering how to spell Minnesota.

I have no idea what song you’re talking about.
….aluminum, selenium….. now THAT a song!!
1:06 left – darn Iowa.

Yup, I *knew* that Fifty Nifty song would come in handy one day. I had almost 2 minutes to spare.

I could be bed-ridden with Alzheimer’s wearing a diaper and probably still know all of “Fifty Nifty”!
Thankfully, I refrained from naming my home state as “Missoura”!

For those of us who are typing challenged you should allow the two letter postal abbreviations.

2:47 to spare – Fifty Nifty works for me! I’ve made some cash betting people that I can name all 50 states in alphabetical order in under 20 seconds (my record is 15). Thank you to my third grade music teacher (whatever your name is)!

I frazzed out about Indiana and California. Indiana’s easy enough to forget though.

Wow, I don’t know the Fifty Nifty song by heart, but I surprised myself–got all with 2:42 left.
@Mark & Laurel oh man, I never even THOUGHT about memorizing Lehrer’s Elements song. That probably would’ve helped me back in high school chemistry.

Forgot Iowa, Minnesota, and West Virginia. Oh well.

@ Also J
I don’t know the song (I think I’m too old), and I got them all w/ 2:39 left. I’m a visual learner, so i just picture a map. It’s easier to go from west to east. I do get confused w/ Vermont and New Hampshire, transposing them often, but Pennsylvania was my last “ends in A” state so not a problem here.
And really? Minnesota? I’m from Minnesota so never been an issue. What do you do, spell it w/ a “D” or Mini instead of Minne? We have Minneapolis, Minnehaha, Minnetonka, so you learn that quickly.

Another “Fifty Nifty” ace here. That song actually comes in handy more often that I’d like to admit (ok, it’s almost always in trivia-answering situations… but it always makes me seem very smart!)
“Shout ‘em, scout ‘em, tell all about ‘em!” :)

Big Jonny–
I used to get Vermont and NH mixed up too– until I figured out that Vermont is the one shaped like a “V”–problem solved. ;)

I did use “Fifty Nifty”, I pictured the map and ran through them I missed Pennsylvania. I was in the hospital several times as a child. I was given U.S. state flash cards. I can name the states based on shape, and tried to recall from memory. If I could type, with more fingers, I may have gotten this one.

I’ve never heard the song. I got them all in two minutes flat, just by visualizing a map

I missed one that borders my home state!Arrrgggghhhh!!!!

I’ve never heard the song.. got finished in a minute 18 sec… but then again I got good at memorizing the states when they had the “Name All 50 States” Quiz… I wanted to type all 50 under a minute but at my best could only do 63 sec.

Yay! FINISHED WITH 2:15 LEFT!
Knowing the states song has become more helpful than I ever imagined (especially when taking mental floss quizzes)!

I never heard of nifty-fifty, but I always used the Allan Sherman Holiday for States song.

Darn Pennsylvania! 20/21 is not bad for a Canadian though. Even though I should’ve gotten the state where Sidney Crosby plays…

1:17 left to spare. no nifty fifty needed. boo yah…

OK I don’t know that crazy Fifty Nifty song everyone is talking about, but 2:00 minutes left, all but one…darn you Iowa! The rest I just visualized a map…that’s how I remember it!
