You are not thinking surreptitiously enough. Texting is for people who shouldn't really be using their phones at all. Co workers, high school kids in school, people at shows. This is the prefered method of getting updates from illicit lovers while at dinner with the licit. You must think of texting as a form of mental telepathy, without the mental. It's also a form of enforced courtesy. Like email, it allows you to say what you want without being interupted.

In 100 years, I think DNA contests will be all the rage.

Who has the longest sequence (no pun intended) of alternating C's and T's in their genome? Or maybe, Hooters will have a contest for the longest string of alternating T's and A's...

So, I assume you already know of the world's fastest text messager?

Tangentially: I don't get the rage of texting. It's like already having the telephone and getting excited about telegraph. Ooh! It takes longer and you don't get to hear the voice and inflections! What will they think of next?
Fed Ex gives way to pony express!
Open hearth to replace microwave ovens!
Crudely stitched animal skins an improvement over silk Pierre Cardin suit.

Marketing is evil.
