  2. While the town of Plzen is in the Czech Republic, the region was once largely German-speaking. The German name for Plzen is Pilsen, and Pilsner is the adjectival form in German. Therefore, the etymology of the word is German, not Czech. The Czech equivalent is “Plzensky.” The famous beer from the town “Pilsner Urquell” is its German name; the Czechs call it “Plzensky Staropramen.”
