Hot Dog Eating record Smashed!
by Mangesh Hattikudur - June 4, 2007 - 8:30 AM

0_61_hot_dog.jpgFans of competitive eating will be happy to know that there’s a new king in town. Fox News is reporting that a 22-year old Californian named Joe Chestnut obliterated the hot dog eating record previously set by Japanese whiz kid Takeru Kobayashi. (Not to be too jingoistic, but just hearing that makes me want to shout USA, USA!) Apparently, Chestnut scarfed his way to first place by downing an incredible 59.5 HDB’s (hot dogs and buns) in this weekend’s Southwest Regional Hot Dog Eating Championship. The previous record had been 53.75 dogs, set at Nathan’s Famous 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. And while some might argue that Chestnut is only competing for the love of the sport, he did get some perks out of placing: not only did he win a trip to New York, and a year’s supply of hot dogs, but he also won a $250 gift card to a local mall. Not bad for 12 minutes of work. Click here to read more.

  1. Joey Chestnut is famous in Philly. He is the reigning Wingbowl champ. He won the last two Wingbowls. He ate 173 wings to win in 2006 and 182 wings to win in 2007.

  2. I don’t know what the sponsors consider a “year’s supply”, but at that pace he would eat 2.6 million dogs.

  3. A year’s supply? That’d be easy; after eating that many dogs I wouldn’t touch another for two years.

  4. By the way, here’s some fodder for a future ‘Floss article: Check out Major League Eating at www.majorleagueeating.com the official franchise for “all competitive professional eating events”. There is also the International Federation of Competitive Eaters at www.ifoce.com which seems to have goals parallel to MLE, and www.competitiveeatingnews.com/ ; the news source for eating events.

Who knew that overeating could be considered a sport, or that there would be such organization to it? Ugh. I gag a bit just thinking about eating more than a plate full.

  5. i love joey. he was amazing on IDENTITY.

  6. I am not sure, but I think he threw out the first ball at this past sunday’s Mets game.
