The Russian metro: it’s not fair
by Ransom Riggs - June 5, 2007 - 7:46 AM

russianmetro.jpgSure, Russia has some chronic transportation problems. Over and above the fact that it takes forever just to cross the country from one end to the other, it also has roads that look like this, and traffic jams that look like this. On the other hand, Moscow has an amazingly, make-me-jealous metro system. They call it the “Underground Palace” for a reason: each station was designed by a noted architect or artist, like this one:russian-underground-metro.jpg

And it doesn’t stop at the stations themselves — even the cars are beautiful. Take a gander at what passes for subway graffiti in Moscow, after the jump:1.jpg

  1. true, they are quite gorg. especially the insides of the cars: wood, chrome, etc. but i recall the people riding those trains being the most unhappy looking i’d ever seen in my life.

i remember thinking the juxtaposition of the beauty of the metro and the pain and sorrow on the faces of the locals was sort of creepy.

  2. And I would think that no amount of beautiful architecture would make up for all the sketchy political corruption and reporters dying.
