by David K. Israel - June 6, 2007 - 8:04 AM

We know how much you love to play air guitar when no one is looking. Go on, admit it. But how well do you know your guitar solos when given just a snippet? That’s right: it’s name that solo over at the latest soundbite quiz. Remember to come on back and let us know if you rock or not.

  1. 100%! I am:

    1. old;
    2. playing too much “Guitar Hero.”

  2. 100%. That was simple, but really pleasant.

  3. 100% That was easy-peasy, although I am impressed that the solo used from “Cinnamon Girl” was not the better known one-note solo. Ah, Neil Young. Playing one note over and over, but making it ROCK!

  4. 88% I’ve never been a big fan of either Yes or of Jane’s Addiction, and I mixed the two up.

Got most of them on the first few notes, though. Nice quiz.

  5. rocked it. 100%.

  6. 100%, rock!

Next time how about only the first second, or even the first note or two…?

  7. 100% - Took a bit to distinguish between Police and Neil Young ’cause I haven’t spent much time listening to them (hate me if you must, but it’s true). It was fun to guess the track, then go find it on the choices. Loved that you included “Three days” - perhaps my favorite Jane’s Addiction song. Fun quiz, thanks!

  8. Darn. I would have made 100%, but I somehow screwed up by swapping the Michael Jackson one with the one from “Eruption”. Valerie?

  9. 100% baby

  10. 100% - though I got lucky, not knowing the Jane’s Addiction or Neil Young at all, and only getting the Police song by the guitar tone…

  11. 100%- I did each one in a few notes.. N.Young the only one I dindt know, so be default got it right

  12. 100%. Didn’t know that particular Neil Young song, but I sure as hell recognized the guitar. All the rest I got in a couple of notes… too much time as a bass player waiting for the guitarists to copy a part note by friggin note rather than just find the changes and improv from there.

  13. only 13 outta 16 here :( some classic rifts tho’

  14. 100%. It’s interesting, although I know both songs, it took a second listen to figure out Cinnamon Girl and the Police. Although the songs are well know the intros are not.

The easiest three note intro was missing. Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water.

Was once in a bar in a hotel in the Catskills in the lates 70s. The crowd was decidedly Sintra fans. The band, before playing the requisite Sinatra songs, tuned up by playing those three notes. The crowd had no clue.

  15. 100%! I wight have missed the Police one, except the ID for it showed up in Media Player. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who did so well…it makes me feel younger.

  16. Too easy…. fun though

  17. 100% - too cool for school. Knew ‘Freebird’ was going to be on there before I even opened the link. Off to list to ‘Eruption’…

  18. Score: 100% (16 out of 16)

    Age: 40

    Agreed, on all counts:

    Too old
    Too easy
    Fun

The only one I questioned was Jane’s Addiction, but having confidently nailed the others, that was the only one left.

  19. Yeah, 100% here too…Freebird came up, I immediately thought of Stonehenge…

    Anyone else?

  20. That was fun! I’m emailing it to all my brothers.

  21. 100%, very easy & fun!

Although I was dissapointed there was no Rush/Alex Lifeson !!! The intro/solo of “Spirit of Radio” would have fit right in.

It is also my cel phone ringtone…

  22. Easy Peasy…but LOVED playing.

I think that only one or two seconds would be a great idea… or the notes of the solo played alone (so as not to get more clues from the song)

Thanks for including 3 days…forgot about the greatness of that song…must update iPod!

  23. 100%, Jane’s Addiction was the only one left. It was fun.

  24. Pretty easy, got 100% But props for including Prince and giving him the credit he deserves. He’s very underrated as a guitar player.

  25. Too easy…16/16…no Zappa?…for shame!

  26. 100%

Fairly easy, I will admit the only one I wasn’t really posative on was Dave Navarro, but I waited until the last and he was left . . .

  27. 100% and I’m only 25…

The only ones I didn’t know immediately were the Police and Jane’s Addiction songs. Neil Young I didn’t remember the part but at once knew the tone.

    Good fun

  28. 100% and I’m only 15…

This was too easy, and the Jane’s Addiction one was the one was one of the easiest on there

  29. If they really wanted to make it hard, they should have just used nothing but guitar. The bands all have distinctive a sound.

  30. 11 out of 16! But then I was born before some of them were recorded! (Though not necessarily the ones I got wrong!)

  31. If you say, “recorded before I was born” you’re a wuss, who cares. You either know your stuff or you don’t.

DAve Navarro sucks. What the hell is his crap doing on there and Yes and the Eagles are brutal.

  32. Age: 37
    Score: 100
I could name the Police in one note. This song has been killer in concert this year. Neil Young almost threw me off.

  33. I got a 100% too! I sing along more to guitar solos than I do to the words in songs…

  34. should’ve included a bunch more. here’s a list to get started:

    NO STAIRWAY!!

  35. 100% - That was fun. Good song choices.

It should be a timed event and you should award bonus points for beating the clock.

I did it in about 2 minutes and I answered a phone call in the middle of it all.

  36. 100% - Only was uncertain about Neil Young and Jane’s Addiction, but sorted them out.

  37. I got 14 out of 16. Mixed up Prince with Police. Sting’s voice is soso bad I’ve never been able to listen to The Police. “Roxanne” is in my top 3 most hated songs.

  38. 100%

Thats what you get with 30+ years of headbanging.

  39. I couldn’t get it to work. A waste of time and energy. You are the weakest link. Goodbye.

  40. 100%

Not too bad, especially since I’m only 19 :)
