1. There’s a drink called Dr. Brown’s Celery Soda. It’s been around for years, so apparently someone likes it. My parents used to drink it.

2. I actually have some Breath Palette toothpastes in: honey, lavender, rose, lemon tea, and cola. I have tried all but the cola (too scared to try that one). I rather favor the florals, and the lemon tea tastes better with a little honey toothpaste in it.

   As for floral flavors, maybe it’s just Americans that are weirded out by them. After all, Middle Eastern desserts are often flavored with rose petal or orange blossom, and I once tried some European violet pastilles and violet gum — both of which I found pretty nifty.

3. fascinating… I actually would love to try the breath palette stuff (out of pure curiosity) but I think the tubes are out of my grocery price range. That said, have you tasted the curry or salt flavors? if so, what’s your verdict?

4. Beverly, an anise flavored soda that is popular in Italy, never took off in the US. At World of Coca Cola in Atlanta, at the world tasting counters, people who sample the Beverly invariably spit it back out. It’s like a sour cross between licorice and vomit.

   I kinda liked Pepsi Clear. It’s a shame it failed.

5. It’s scary how spot on the Bertie Bott’s Jelly Beans are. The worst tasting one is the spaghetti and meatballs. Tastes exactly like it. Just wrong.

   And speaking of wrong, I once bought the Jones Soda Thanksgiving soda four pack. All I have to say is that the people who develop these flavors are very talented. One taste is enough.

   Also… Tom’s of Maine toothpaste has a fennel flavored toothpaste. Some think it is odd, but it has a nice flavor.

6. You know, I actually remember the Cookies N Cream flavored Quik. It was really good, too. Which is saying a lot for someone who’s really not such a huge fan of milk normally. It’s a shame they got rid of it.

   And the Frosted Peanut Butter and Jelly Pop-Tarts sound amazing, too. I find it absolutely mind-boggling why those didn’t sell. Do people find peanut butter and jelly boring, or something? Could it have something to do with peanut allergies (which is pretty unlikely, given that although that type of allergy is common, it’s clearly not enough to prevent other peanut-related foods usch as Reese’s Pieces or Snickers out of business)?

8. I’m not sure if I happen to be in a test market, but the X-13D Doritos are at my neighborhood grocer…my husband was drawn in by the allure of “mystery” food, but was soon disappointed to find that they taste like @*#&

   I’m just saying I hate it, and I know I’m not alone. I guess it can’t be aptly characterized as a “misstep,” given its commercial success. Ditto for the Coke sold in the middle east. Tastes awful to anyone who’s used to the real thing, but it works fine for some.

11. A friend of mine bought some cheeseburger Doritos at a gas station in New Hampshire. Apparently half the bag ended up in the garbage and her father, “who will eat every chip known to man”, wouldn’t eat more than one.

12. Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray pop is actually pretty good, if you can get past the weird-ness of it. I read about it online somewhere and went on a two-month-long quest to find some. It was actually sweeter than I wanted it to be, but not too far off from ginger ale (except replace the ginger flavor for celery).

    I would love to try that cucumber pop! Maybe I’ll have to plan a trip to Japan…

13. My neighbour boy is skinny with a big ‘ol head so we call him Pez Boy.

    I was just having this conversation the other day on 43 Things all about Jell-O. I was saying I wish I could get invited to a baby shower so I could get some Lime Jell-O with walnut, apples, marshmallows, and grapes. One of the girls said if she saw that she would take her gift and turn right back out the door!

    OMG!
    We are Hooked on LOLCATS!! My son ordered his meal for Fathers Day…I Can Has Cheezburger? LOL!! Or we just make stuff up with our dog. I’m in your window…watching the cats.

    Bertie Botts all flavor beans were a hit at my sons Harry Potter birthday party. No one ate the vomit flavored one, I had to wash my hand after just holding it, it smelled so BAD :P

    Back when I worked in the dental office we used to get all sorts of samples. My fav was the pink bubble gum tooth paste with sparkles. At least it didn’t burn my mouth like some of the mint flavors do.

16. Yeah the Doritos are crap. smells just like a mcDonalds burger. i thought it was taco at first but it hints as “All american classic”.
    Ingredients include beef and onion powder, and i think mustard seeds or something.

17. Blue Bell ice cream once produced a Dill Pickles n’ Cream and a Licorice flavor. Apparently, the licorice was a poor seller more because it turned people’s mouth black than because they didn’t like the taste. However, licorice is one of those love-hate flavors, and I think more people hate it than love it.

19. When I was in Bar Harbor, Maine I found an ice cream shop selling lobster ice cream. I tried a sample scoop… not bad. It tasted like vanilla ice cream with chunks of frozen lobster (go figure) with strong buttery aftertones. I think its a Maine thing.

22. I live in Sacramento, which is a major test market, so we get some odd foods now and then. The “secret” Doritos have been in stores for a while now and I must admit that I kind of like them. There are plenty of dill-flavored chips out there, and that’s the strongest flavor in these chips. Granted, more than a few of these at a time and I’ve got a major stomachache. As an awesome sidenote, one of my mother’s co-workers took on the challenge of naming the new Doritos flavor, and sent in the brilliant “Dill-Dos” suggestion!

23. There are two restaurants here in NJ called “Garlic Rose” and they do a fairly disappointing garlic ice cream. It was just plain ice cream with big ol’ chunks of garlic in it. SO much potential wasted.

    I have also had broccoli ice cream, but I cannot for the life of me remember where I had it.

24. I live in Japan and they are now selling a cucumber-flavored Pepsi called “Pepsi Ice Cucumber.” I tried a taste the other day. It smells exactly like cucumbers and tastes disgusting. Even my Japanese co-workers thought it was horrible, so I don’t understand what Pepsi is doing! SICK…

26. My father always loved the Thrill’s gum which actually advetises itself as “The Gum That Tastes Like Soap!”. Even I have become partial to the stuff.. I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned! Anyone else enjoy that familiar taste?

27. Around Thanksgiving, There was a Jones Soda gift set that had turkey, broccoli casserole, some kind of cobbler, and (get this) pink antacid flavored sodas. I hate to admit that I was ever so slightly intrigued.

    And just recently, cucumber-flavored Pepsi went on the market in Japan. Gross.

28. Everyone’s so quick to forget last year’s COCA-COLA BLAK… Coffee and Coca-Cola… blech! Everyone took a sip from one bottle, didn’t want more, and the rest went in the garbage.

    My poor dad LOVED the Cookies N Cream Quik…

    Amy’s Ice Creams where I live frequently features beer flavored ice cream. Usually Guinness or Shiner Bock. They’re surprisingly good!

    But I also like things like green tea ice cream and avocado bubble tea, so go figure!

29. We tried the cheeseburger Doritos…we thought they tasted like shrimp until I read the ingredients. Beef powder, cheddar cheese, tomato, and mustard….yep, it’s cheeseburger.

    Though, I give props to Doritos for making the new cheddar bbq….my new favorite!

    Oh, and Jones does that every Thanksgiving with new flavors. There was brussels sprouts, and other flavors I can’t remember. The cranberry was the only good one (for obvious reasons).

31. In Fredonia NY where I grew up there was a local dairy that made “special” ice cream every April Fools’ Day. The only ones I can remember are spaghetti & meatballs and liver & onions. Aldrich’s is still there – I’m sure they still make April Fools’ ice cream.

34. Russell Stover used to make peanut butter & jelly cups, kind of like Reese’s only with jelly. I loved them, especially chilled. But they stopped making them several years ago. =(

35. I have to agree. The black pepper Bertie Bott’s Jelly Beans aren’t icky at all! They’re tasty! On the other hand, Fire Cracker Pickled Meat Snacks are really, really disgusting. I advise you to never, ever taste them.

37. Askov, MN, is possibly the world rutabaga capital. There’s a place there that serves rutabaga smoothies. I have not had one, but my father, a born and bred Minnesotan, tells me they’re rather disgusting.

39. Herr’s makes Heinz ketchup flavored potato chips. EW. Frito Lay also has Dill Pickle potato chips, which is also pretty gross. They still exist but I have no idea how.

    I’ve had dr brown’s cel-ray soda. That stuff’s actually pretty tasty. What about the coffee flavored cola? coca cola blak? who the hell thought putting bubbles in coffee was a good idea? snyder’s makes a crab flavored potato chip that’s pretty gross. I think most of those are still in production.

41. I hear that asparagus ice cream is quite popular in the Belgium area.

    I have to say that I recently had cucumber water at a spa, and is was really light and refreshing. I can’t wait to try a few slices in my Pepsi.

    Bertie Bott’s is a huge hit with my nephew as well. Vomit is his favorite flavor.

44. When I was living in Japan, I used to find funny flavors everywhere. My favorites were ice creams sold only in specific areas of Japan. A few that I heard of, but never got the change to try, were squid ink (almost black in color), wasabi, purple sweet potato, and goya (a bitter tasting melon that looks like a bumpy cucumber). Japan is the land of odd flavors, so I was not surprised to read that they are coming out with a cucumber flavored Pepsi.

45. I know I’m in the minority here, but I loved the Super Secret Doritos. Unfortunately one of the final two ingredients is beef tallow, which I try to exclude from my diet. I bought a bag for my co-workers to try and most people didn’t like it at all. Their objections seemed to be based on the “weirdness” of the actual cheezburger flavor simulation rather than an unfavorable reaction to the taste. And the Bernie Botz Beans. I wound up eating the vomit flavored bean after I missed a pie question playing Trivial Pursuit and I COULD NOT get the taste out of the back of my throat. It tasted exactly like vomit. Who is the taster at the factory for these horrible flavors? Do they get hazard pay?

46. A friend hosts an “Everything’s Better With Bacon” party each year. Two years a go the dish that won a prize for “Messes Most with the Laws of Nature” was bacon-chip ice cream. It wasn’t awful. It had that nice salty/sweet thing going, like chocolate covered pretzels.

50. Potentially disgusting product that’s always in my fridge; Clamato. Tomato juice crossed with clam juice? Sounds awful, I know, but it’s really tasty – particularly as the main ingredient in a Bloody Mary. Also good mixed with Red Stripe the morning after too many Bloody Marys.

52. This may be urban legend, but I read that a company in Japan that made fish sausage (ewwwwww!) was experiencing difficulty marketing to younger consumers (I wonder why?). They did some market research and decided to produce a strawberries and cream version. (OMG! Cucumber Pepsi actually sounds tame compared to this.)

53. I just tried chocolate bubblegum from Bubble Yum. Odd, but a nice flavor. I actually thought the Cola Blak wasn’t half bad, even though I don’t drink coffee. Ginger altoids i agree on – those are terrible!
    As far as ice cream, I’ve tried champagne sherbet, which was really good. There’s also an ice cream flavor around here called Blue Moon. I can’t for the life of me figure out what it tastes like. A lot of people like it, but personally I find it disgusting.

54. Cherry PEZ is actually still available in other countries. I have some! And I think it’s pretty darn good. So is Raspberry PEZ. Their Chocolate PEZ though… ugh… tastes like… well.. chalk.

55. Funny how everyone has their own tastes. My husband LOVES the Cel-Ray soda. I ordered him a case for Christmas & he is still savoring the cans slowly. (Shipping was $$$). He would probably try the celery jello if it was still available! He also loves the Coke Black, my daughter even likes it too. I am not a big fan…but to each his own opinion.

56. My brother lived in Mexico for two years and came home liking candy covered in chili powder. I think his favorite was called Skwinkles, and they were tamarind with chili powder, kind of like a fruit roll-up. Weird.

    He also like another one that I can’t think of the name of that you squirted. It was mushy candy with chili powder. So strange.

58. Two Thanksgivings ago, I was forunate enough to get my hands on a Jones Soda Holiday Pack. I had a bunch of friends and family over and we all tasted them. (and then promptly spit them in the provided bowl)

    I believe the flavors that year were mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and stuffing.

63. I could have sworn the x13d doritos were Steak and Baked Potato, which is probably odder. They are a weird mix of flavors. I have tasted a-1 steak sauce, and sour cream, thus the above. There was also a strong tomato flavor, which I suppose is meant to be ketchup.

    I think in reality it is one of those products that fall into the category I call “Vat Cleaner”, where all the residue left over is dumped, and called a new flavor. Coca Cola has tried it several times, apparently cleaning the Fresca and Sprite vats. Any Candy, from LifeSavers to to Starburst, which promote a “Berry” flavor, are doing exactly the same thing, mixing together the leftovers.

64. At a local ice cream place I tried lemongrass basil ice cream. It was the nastiest stuff. When it first hits the tongue you think you’re getting a light lemony treat, then all of a sudden the oregano sneaks up on you and it’s like someone wrung out a pizza in there!

    They also do jalapeno ice cream, which after this experience, I wouldn’t try on a bet.

65. I’m from Canada and find it really funny that everyone thinks ketchup or dill pickle chips are gross and weird. They’re two standard popular flavors around here. Ketchup chips are really good. Weirder ones are roast chicken or buffalo wing.

66. I have to disagree with you about the Beverly, Cathy. It does not taste like licorice and vomit. More like robitussin, but 10x more bitter…..Oh God…I’m starting to gag even thinking about it…..

    The lobster ice cream that Amy(#19) mentioned was actually featured in a food network show, I think it was top 5. I actually want to try it…

    My aunt and uncle get the celery soda all the time. I love it. I don’t know, but Dr. Brown’s sodas seem to be popular with the Jewish folk. Try looking at a kosher grocer for it. It’ll probably be there. Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda is the best.

    Who remembers when companies tried coloring condiments? My mom made meatloaf with green ketchup (she puts ketchup on top… REALLY good!), and It somehow didn’t seem as appetizing….

67. Cold Slab, a southern ice cream chain, had a wasabi flavor for about a week before it panned. I loved it, sweet and spicy.

    I’ve had chocolate cake wrapped it bacon too, made by some friends on a camping trip, it was suprisingly not vomit-inducing.

    Some high-end mexican fusion restaurant down here charged mt $12 dollars for cheese enchiladas with tamarind sauce, which is pretty much tasted like cloyingly sweet rotting meat.

68. On the subject of Jones Soda Thanksgiving, we found last year’s selections at a thrift store and just had to try. The burselle sprouts was the worst, but pumpkin pie was the biggest disappointment. It was horrible… I’d rather drink the turkey and grave again.

70. In Boonville NY there is a dairy on Rt 12 that sells wine ice cream, 5% alcohol!! It has won numerous prizes, but the thought of wine with milk????

72. Lavender flower candies are available at many bodegas in NYC. They’re the size of Starburst, and the consistency of Pez. I tried them once. They suck.

    There’s an Egyptian pear soda I always get at Falafel Chula in Williamsburg Bklyn. It’s really, really good.

    Amy’s Ice Cream (Austin): I’m proud to be the first customer to have bought their bleu cheese ice cream. (Maybe the last, but it was great.) Like many fine cheeses, the flavors come out as it warms in your mouth.

    Lastly, Mitchell’s ice cream in San Francisco has many unusual flavors, including purple yam. The one that keeps bringing me back to the Bay is avocado. Subtle, very creamy.

73. I frequent places where specialty foods are sold and the oddest thing I’ve come across is birdsnest drink. I picked it up in an asian food market. The bottle said “made with real birdsnest” which I thought odd. The taste however was paletable though it reminded me of wet, thick, slimy sugar with a mild oak taste.

75. I’ve seen some pretty wild chip flavours come and go, over the years, up here in Canada. These have included: hot dog, smokey bacon, blue cheese dip, pork chop and rotisserie chicken. Most recently, I’ve picked up a can of pizza flavoured pringles. The experience, my girlfriend and I agreed was akin eating a solidified, wedge shaped “first huff” off a fresh, hot all dressed pizza, green bell peppers and all! 10/10 emulation points 0/10 form factor points. Also these last few years, Lay’s has had this thing with comming up with “Local delicacy” flavours. I don’t know what they’ve been coming out with outside of Montréal but our surprise flavours have been poutine, (don’t know what it is? look it up on wiki) Smoked meat sandwich and St Hubert roasted chicken!

76. Had the X-13D chips this weekend as well. Served them at my BBQ. We did agree that they taste like McDonald’s cheeseburgers, with too much mustard. They weren’t very popular until they were dipped in Ranch dressing…but even then it was grossness with Ranch dressing.

79. wow, I had to laugh at some, and cring at others…
    I must be the only weirdo out there who Loved Coke Blak & Ginger Altoids, eagerly seek out Mexican candies(I LOVE the mango gooey ones shaped like pencils! mmmm), have enjoyed ‘cucumber water’ from a mexican cantina- basically its like crystal light; it has a cool, clean, slightly citrus whiff to it, but there is a distinct flavor of cukes. Not bad. I also am partial to the Aquas Frescas type soft drinks: Jamaica (ha-my-ka) flavor.
    I am a sucker for new flavored things. Chips, candy, soda-I too bought a Jones Thanksgiving pack, but gave it as a gag gift to my brother and never did taste it.
    I have tried some interesting Ice cream and Boba tea flavors. I LOVE LYCHEE. Never tried avocado, though have been tempted. I have actually gotten people to like my creative tastes. I was the first in my circle to suck up with vigor anything with ginger in it: Ginger beer, Dark&Stormy’s, altoids, chocolate covered ginger bits, ice cream, tea, etc. I love crazy flavored teas, toothpastes (Where can i find the ones mentioned #2???), even flower candies. Lavendar chocolate is amazing!
    Rosemary too.
    But I cannot imaging Musk Life savers. o.0 too much for me thanks.

In Vancouver, BC a little while back I got to try a bunch of foods that were new and unusual to me – among my favorites were the bran ice cream (with little bits of bran in it and everything!), rose ice cream, and a black sesame bubble tea … ooh, and a banana and avocado sandwich, so nice and creamy, I’m going to have to do one of those myself sometime!

    Those dill potato chips are great, too – though my favorite source of “weird” crisp flavors would have to be the UK, I never could handle the scampi ones but man oh days, I sure wish we could get the roast beef & horseradish chips here in America …

81. My friends and I have always wondered about the research that went into the Bertie Bott’s Jelly Beans. “No, this vomit one needs to be more acid-y.” “the ear wax is a little on the sweet side” etc. Ick.

    I lived in Ohio for a few years and every themed festival has it’s own ice cream. The Corn Festival has corn ice cream, the Rose Festival, etc, but the kicker is the Sauerkraut Festival! EW!

    I’ve heard of places in South America that make the following ice cream flavors: rice, fish, beef, chicken, and rose.

    Here in Israel you can get all kinds of snacks that are falafel flavored. :P

84. The Lavender candies from the NY area are called C.Howard Violet and gum by the same company called Scented Gum. There is a strong floral flavor and scent. I think they were developed to mask the smell of tobacco.
    When I was a kid, I used to eat a whole pack of it. My mother could not stand to be around when I did because my breath would smell like violets and she couldn’t stand that smell.

88. I love this discussion!

    One of the strangest things I have ever eaten was Skittles ‘en fuego’. I used to live in a town whose population was 60% Mexican, and all kinds of wonderful treats have come out of Mexico. (Pan dulce, anyone?) But anyhow, we saw skittles that had been coated in chili powder…it was sort of like eating a strawberry that was on fire. Very bizarre. Tamarind is also a flavor that is not for the faint of heart – it tastes like sweet, salty dirt.

    A few years back, I purchased some of the green ketchup they came out with, and I just couldn’t shake the idea that it was more sour than normal ketchup. It’s amazing how visual signals affect what we eat.

    Oh, and Pepsi Clear? I WANT IT BACK! That stuff was so amazingly good.

90. Went to the Jelly Belly distribution center store in So. WI and tried a garlic Jelly Belly. Weirdly satisfying, but a little sharp on the raw garlic flavor.
    Yes they still make popcorn jelly bellies, as well as carmel corn Jelly Bellies.

    I had heard that the Vomit Jelly Bellies were actually a failed attempt at a pepperoni pizza bean; if you try them again, they do taste like pepperoni!

91. Hm.. Russell Stover’s also had s’mores that were pre-made, which were exceptionally tasty.

    And a throwback to the 80’s that never should have been gone – Mr. Phipps Pretzel chips. We used to stack a Better Made potato chip, a Mr. Phipps, and a hamburger dill chip together and eat them. Good stuff!

    I also know that over in Germany, the chocolate is flavored with herbs. I’m not a fan, though.

    I was interested in many of the

    The Snyder crab chips;
    were a personal favorite

    They are flavored with the
    seasoning of a traditional
    mid Atlantic crab boil

    having any shellfish product
    in the ingredients, or taste,
    just as well;
    I don’t care for seafood.

    Pink champagne sherbet;
    was, and may still be,

    My Mother used to love it.

    Weirdest soda I ever tasted;
    was in the Soviet Union,
    it was named after a huge lake
    there; Baikal.
    it tasted as though it was
    flavored from submerged
    logs and driftwood from the lake.
    My Soviet acquaintances,
    compared it to our root beer,
    which they said was awful tasting.

    Also strange and new to me,
    on that same trip were the
    Fruit waters,
    banana, pineapple, pear,

96. I love love love Ginger Altoids, even better now that they coat them in chocolate.

    On the interesting flavor page, there’s the Korean (I think) aloe juice… tastes like grape but with slimey chunks of aloe in it. Good taste, weird mouth feel.

98. I worked for a vending machine company a few years back and they were testing candies from around the world in their machines to start marketing internationally. The absolute strangest thing I saw (and tried) was SOAP flavored gum. It was made by Willy Wonka and I thought it must be a miss print and meant to be SOUP flavored, like in the movie. Well, it tasted like liquid hand-soap. Afterwords, my co-workers said that my breath smelled nice and clean! I took some and fooled a few victims, er, friends, with it.

99. I was surprised not to see the Jones Sodas on here a little more. Last year, we bought a six pack of pie flavored sodas. Peach, blueberry, lemon cream, strawberry and apple pie were included. They actually tasted like the pie, not the fruit, it was really eerie. The apple had a warm doughy-ness with cinnamon.

100. I have to admit as a mature adult, I did actually try the Bertie Botts jellybelly when they came out. The most awful one out of that box was definately the booger one. The texture and the taste were absolutely too much for me!

     I liked the clear pepsi too.

     I live in a town that has several potato chip, snack manufacturing plants, and the most unusual one is Salt and Pepper Potato Chips, and they taste kinda good.

     I can’t believe that they still make spam. To me it just tastes like a giant salt lick.

101. I love strange flavors. I’ll try just about anything once (but I draw the line at Clamato).
     I wish I could’ve tried the Jones Pie flavors. Snapple had some pie-flavored juices, too (the mix included flour to give you the crust-flavor). Tried the apple, and only drank one bottle out of the four pack. Not that great.
     I loved Pepsi Blue, although, and this sounds strange, but I felt it tasted exactly like how a Strawberry Shortcake doll smelled. And several people who tried it agreed with me, and promptly dumped the bottle after thinking about it.
     I also love the Buttered Popcorn flavored Jelly Bellys. At one time they also made a Cinnamon Popcorn flavor that was incredible. Of course, now you’ll need to eat a Popcorn and Cinnamon bean together to get the same taste.

103. Avacado ice cream sounds awful but it’s very, very good and tasty. You can find it in Asian grocery stores. Love the Ginger Altoids, but love all things ginger flavored, and the Jamaican ginger beer will kick your *** til tomorrow! The Korean Aloe drink (Paldoe is the manufacturer) is wonderful and aloe is so soothing to upset tummies (useful after eating things mentioned above). Gross are the Chinese snacks of wasabi and chili flavored dried fish and shrinmp (v.v.nasty).

104. Our older daughter was three years old when Baskin Robbins had licorice ice cream in 1977. She discovered that if she ate it she could really shock people by sticking her tongue out or just opening her mouth. Needless to say, we bought it for her once. Once.

     And here’s another vote for avocado ice cream. We had homemade at a Sunday school party. Delicious.

106. When I was in New Orleans a month ago, my friends and I found a Gelato shop that had some weird flavors. There was Abita Root Beer Gelato, Persimmon Gelato, and a few others that were really strange.

     Dill pickle chips are great, but has anyone ever tried a brand called Zapp’s? They make a a Spicy Cajun Crawtater. Very interesting.

107. I will echo an above comment about how much we Canadians love ketchup and dill pickle chips. Long road trips in the US just aren’t the same without these pit-stop essentials.

     I also can’t get over how some US McDonald’s don’t even have the ketchup squirters with the napkins and straws. You actually have to ask the till people FOR ketchup. Unheard of above the border!

I was 13 at the time, so settled for the least odd-sounding flavor I could find – watermelon. needless to say, I didn’t get my choc chip cookiedough fix that afternoon…

113. I’m suprised no one’s mentioned the fried food craze. Kansas and Texas state fairs featured items such as fried twinkies, fried cola, deep-fried apples, fried cheeseballs, “elephant ears” and “Fat Dough.” They also added Fried snickers and deep fried latte. For the youngsters they had fried Peanut Butter, banana and Jelly sandwiches and Fried Mac n’ Cheese.
     A restaurant in Belleville, Ks, served fried pickles, which my father couldn’t get enough. On a return trip, however, he was extremely disappointed to find the restaurant closed.
     On another note my dad has developed fried grapes. Made with funnel cake batter, he says they are delicious. I don’t have the guts for them.

115. I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it, but in Iceland they have fish jerky. They basically catch fish and hang them on a clothing line till they’re dry. That has got to be the nastiest smell, EVER! Of all the countries I’ve been to, I’d give Iceland the award for weird food with their ram testicles, which I’ve been told weren’t bad, just had an odd texture. Why would you put that in your mouth to begin with? Eck!

119. A friend of mine served Buffalo chicken dip from Costco a couple of weeks ago. When I didn’t know what it was, it tasted like nasty spicy cheese dip, but after she told us, I tried it again and it was great! It’s got blue cheese and chicken chunks and celery and spicy sauce in some kind of creamy base . . . but it still makes me think of someone taking a plate of foods that go well together and just dumping it all in the blender until it’s pale orange, so I have to try not to think about it too much.

120. While traveling on business in China, I have come across some really bizarre (to Western taste) foods and combinations. On my first trip, after a big deal, we were at a very upscale restaurant celebrating, and there was a “Manhattan” ice cream sundae. I was feeling uptown, and was shocked!! when a vanilla sundae with canned corn kernals sprinkled on top arrived.

122. During the summer I had a job at a very high end clubhouse as a server, and there we had a cucumber sorbet that came with the gazpacho (cold tomato based soup). The sorbet was actually good despite how it might sound. And I have tried that celery soda for kicks…disgusting doesn’t even begin to describe it.

123. A new local fusion restaurant that features a lot of Asian or Asian-inspired cuisine that includes a large sushi menu, has a few unusual sushi dishes.

     One of my favorites is the “Golden California” rolls. They’re basically California Rolls… with the addition of cream cheese in the center, and with the outside of the roll tempura-fried. They have another sushi roll that’s center is basically crab meat, avacado, and cream size – again, tempura-fried on the outside. They’re both absolutely delicious, and I’m effectively addicted to them. Who knew cream cheese went so well with seafood!?

     Another weird thing is Starbucks’ so-called “Chai tea” (which is hugely redundant, as the word “chai” MEANS “tea” in many languages. Is it just me or does Starbucks like to take foreign words for things – Venti is another good example – redefine what they actually refer to, and then trademark the hell out of it?). It’s basically one half black tea with spice (mostly cinnamon, from the taste and smell of it), with the rest being milk or cream. Cinnamon-spiced black tea “latte” would have sounded weird to me if you’d told me that was what it was beforehand, but it actually is pretty damn crazy-sweet-creamy-tasty – though my mom says it’s far too sweet for her to stand drinking.

     The weirdest thing Starbucks does though, I think, is all the different flavors of Frappucino they make – they made a blueberry one once. It was… well, it was exactly like if you poured a gazillion ounces of blueberry juice and cream and sugar into a bunch of ice and slushified it, really. More like a dessert in a cup, and not necessarily one I’d recommend!

But the ultimate barf inducer was Key Lime flavored chips, compliments of Zapps. OK, I love Key lime, but I have to say it does not cross over into the salty crunchy realm very well. Don’t ever, ever ,ever try them. it’s not worth it.

125. Goodness, apparently nobody else has experienced the nose-hair curling, taste-bud-destroying insanity that is Cherry Chill Excel gum. Well, was, because they don’t make it anymore, probably because it tasted like extra-concentrated cherry cough syrup laced with death and made your eyes water.

     It was pretty much the best cold remedy ever. One piece cleared your sinuses out for a good day or more.

     I miss it. And they never sold it in America, it was just a Canadian thing apparently. They had a similar flavor of Eclipse gum, but it wasn’t as amusingly strong, and even more repulsively medicinal.

126. Has anyone heard of Jeni’s Fresh Ice Creams? They have really exotic flavors, but everything I’ve tried has been fantastic. My favorite has been the Queen City Cayenne (dark chocolate with a pepper kick), but the Thai Peanut is good too (think thai peanut sauce, again with the peppers). They also have other things like a pear reisling sorbet and Maker’s Mark butter pecan. Awesome!

127. In reference to the ginger Altoids… I agree that they taste terrible, but if you stick with them, they grow on you. I was taking a medicine that made me nauseous every day until I would eat a few ginger Altoids afterward. Ginger is a lovely homeopathic remedy for nausea, and Altoids are much cheaper than *actual* ginger.

130. In Cleveland, we have a wonderland called the “westside market”. There are a lot of ethnic food stands.

     One of the more interesting things I tasted was dark chocolate covered mexican nuts.

     But in the dark chocolate was a healthy dose of cayenne pepper.

     It tastes great, then all of the sudden, the cayenne hits you. (high in antioxidants)

131. I’ve tried the Chelada recently (the Budweiser or Bud Light with Clamato and Lime) at the restaurant I work at. Absolutely terrible. Apparently it’s supposed to be like a canned Bloody Mary, but they completely messed it up. It’s watery and leaves a faint vomit taste in your mouth.

     To be fair, though, I only tried the Bud Light. Maybe somehow the Budweiser would be better.

135. Years ago I came across a stout flavored ice cream and, since I’m compelled to try all new flavors and combinations, bought it. Absolutely delicious. Like butterscotch, I thought. Can’t now remember brand name, but will never again pass up a chance at beer flavor ice cream. Inspired me to experiment and came up with a beer cake. Pretty good stuff. Like spice cake. Needed to boil down (dark) beer to get intensity of flavor.

     Tried the Doritos. Opinion= ehh, not horrible.

     Black Mountain Brewery in Cave Creek Arizona makes a beer called “Chili Beer”. Has a whole chili pepper IN THE BOTTLE. Pop the cap & the chili starts bubbling. Beer gets hotter & hotter as you drink it! Maybe your local beer/wine store will order you a case like mine will. Try some today!

138. You want strangeness come to Korea. Green Tea flavours everything! Icecream, cake, cookies, gum, Halls… The cake was ok actually.
     Strange chips overhere: cheetos Bulgogi flavoured (bulgogi is a way to season meat) I actually like them. Shrimp chips (reek!).

142. I guess Combos didn’t learn from Doritos’s mistake. They now have Cheeseburger flavored Combos that taste exactly like a McDonald’s cheeseburger. I like them but most everyone I forced to try them only tasted whatever they dislike most on a cheeseburger. (For my boyfriend it was pickles, for my boss it was mustard)
     They also make bacon egg and cheese combos. One of my co-workers bought those. I don’t think they are nearly as good!

143. Yup…as some others have noted here, the x13D Doritos are available in New Hampshire. I tried them a while back and they were…interesting. We finished the bag, but I don’t think any of us felt the need to go back for more. Ever.

     As for other odd tastes, I once found that chocolate pop tarts and french onion dip was a very tasty combination.

144. When my ship was stuck in the Gulf, we got a lot of food from Japan, one of them being ALOE VERA flavored YOGURT. It wasn’t really that bad, but I’m pretty adventurous as far as eating stuff with plants in it. There were crunchy bits of the inside parts of the plant. It was weird.

151. at target they have a line of flavored water, i have tried a few of them, but they were all a little too weird tasting to me, i have had spearmint(like liquid gum without the sugar, very good for breath freshening, and my dad said it actually helped with heartburn, haha), jasmine plum, very floral tasting, and cucumber, exactly how you’d expect it to taste… i also have had an army-ration style freeze dried ice cream, actually really good, cookies and cream flavor

153. I loved those Russell Stover PB&J cups too. I am very picky and have a hard time finding stuff I am ok with eating so when I find something I really like I get a bit obsessed with it and get very upset when it is hard to find or discontinued. My major issue is with finding barqs rootbeer and will go out of my way to buy 12packs a few times a week. As for nasty flavors, the Doritos xd-13 are nasty. AND I MEAN NASTY. I also hate Sunny Delite, not sure how that crap continues to be sold or who the hell buys it. YUCK!

154. Guess I’m the ’somebody who likes it’… I also like those ’salt/vinegar’ and ‘dill pickle’ chips. Salt would be my vice quicker than sweet, I believe.

     Another favorite though not ‘disgusting’ beverage of mine is Ginger BEER … stronger than regular ginger ale, though – I suppose, the strength depends on the maker – Between Stewarts and Old Tyme,

159. So, One of the best weird foods in the world is a slice of corned beef with cream cheese spread on it wrapped around a baby dill pickle. Yes, it is delicious. Ate myself sick on them one thanksgiving years ago. And there is a brand of potato chips called Dakota Style that makes “industrial strength” dill pickle chips. They are so vinegary that it will make the inside of your mouth burn. It’s sooo good :)

164. I’ve had the aloe juice. I bought it at a vending machine in Tokyo. (They’re on EVERY corner, it’s so cool. You can even get cans of heated corn and such). It had a great taste, but yes, really weird feeling with the little globs in it.
     I miss Fritos Twists in Ranch. I guess i was in a research area, because they were there for a while, and I’ve never seen them since. :(

170. Having grown up in Iceland I didn’t even think to mention the weird stuff we ate there until someone mentioned it in the comment sections. Yes we have dried fish (Harðfiskur), pickled sheep balls and a haggis like thing called Lifrapylsa. Salt and Pepper chips are made by a Danish company called Maarud and are one of the more popular chips in Iceland. (Pretty sure they make Dill chips too). Liquorice is pretty popular too with all sorts of chocolate/liquorice combos available. You can also get a beverage called Maltöl (Malt flavored ale), and during Christmas time it’s commonly mixed with a orange soda, into something called Jólaöl (Which I always found to be an absolutely vile concoction). On the dairy side there’s skyr and mysingur (probably tastes something close to marmite.

173. as a kid my favorite food was a slice of white bread with polish salami and…wait for it…nutella. sounds disgusting i know, but it’s pretty good if you like the whole salt/sweet flavour blend.

     BTW, iceland isn’t the only country that has fish jerky, it’s a russian thing too. have been eating as a kid, and still love it to this day.

177. NotSoTweetOne, My best friend’s mom eats PB&P sandwiches! I tried it and it’s not bad. I am also one who will try just about anything!

     I don’t like pickles unless they are fried (Hooter’s has the best!) and I like the dill pickle chips too. I haven’t had the ketchup flavored ones although I am curious to find me a bag.

     I am an ice cream lover and you HAVE to try avocado ice cream! Avocados make for a surprising interesting cookbook. We make a lot of interesting concoctions with them including icing for cakes. Super creamy!

     The ‘Chelada’ drink that Bud came out with is actually a Michelada but with nasty Clamato. It’s much better if you make them with bloody mary mix instead and a Chelada is all the ingredients mixed with beer EXCEPT the tomato…at least here in South Texas that’s how we make it. It’s basically everything you would put in a bloody mary but with beer instead of vodka.

     I’ve had Rocky Mountain Oysters before, but I may have to draw the line at fish jerky! Weird, I know!

180. You want to get some odd flavors…look at all the odd candy that comes from Mexico. While most are nothing more than salt, chili powder, tamanrind pulp and lime juice/powder (Lucas, BomVaso, Dulces Karla, Pulparindo, Pelon Pelo Rico, Pelonazo)..you can also find items like cucumber flavored suckers, a blow pop type lollipop (made by pepsi) that has mango gum surrounded by seven layers of various chili powders…coconut and guava flavored items similar to fruit roll ups.

     Most of the coconut candy was decent…but everything else was fairly filthy tasting. Although…to be fair…even the worst of the mexican candies taste better than Lutefisk.

181. Alright, why didn’t anyone mention Bailey’s Irish Cream ice cream from haagen daaz? Also in Europe (and some places here) there is Palmelo Fanta. Tastes terrible, like a super sour citrus soda. When I lived in Europe I used to drink blood orange juice as well. It tastes a bit sweeter than regular orange, but it is literally bright red like blood. Or in Belgium never ask for an “American hamburger” : it’s a ball of raw hamburger with a raw egg cracked on top, and some diced onions. I have no idea where that got that one. Oh! And there is a fast food place called Quick, they put veggies in their “secret sauce”. Like asparagus, peas (whole), etc and nothing is pureed. Would you like peas in your bacon cheeseburger?
     BTW, Anyone ever try fresh, soft chocolate chip cookies dipped in applesauce and ketchup?

183. I’m one of those people who will invariably try just about anything that’s not slimy and i’ve got to say i’ve found some bizarre things. Lychee soda at the Coca Cola fountain at Disney World – so far beyond foul. Any of a variety of crisps from the UK – the prawn ones and worchestershire sauce ones rule. The lamb and mint were pretty good. The roast chicken and roast beef ones were really tasty and the Thai Chili ones were ok. The *Irish* prawn chips just tasted like chili sauce and salt. Wasabi ice cream from Coldstone Creamery – not as bad as expected. Ginger ice cream – pretty good, actually. Tomato ice cream – just tasted like cold tomato juice. Prunes stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon – very tasty, if you like sweet and savory together. Dandelion and nettle soda – one of the nastiest things i’ve ever had the misfortune of drinking. Red bean ice cream – pretty tasty, if a weird texture. Durian fruit – couldn’t even get past the smell. That is one freaky looking melon. Grass and dirt Bertie Botts – i had more of a problem with the texture than the taste. Guess i’m just weird. Candied rose and violet petals – i rather liked them, but i also will eat any edible flower put in front of me. I’m sure there are plenty more, but i can’t think of them.

191. @Cathy – Moxie is definitely a Maine acquired taste. They have a festival every year that a friend and his family puts on. Check out a website for the town of Lisbon Falls, Maine. People come from all over to get their yearly treat .. I couldn’t get past the smell myself.
     I found lobster and shrimp chips in an Asian store – found them tasty.

192. I remember the Strawberry Shortcake cereal…but I’m a child of the 80s, my favorite was Boo Berry. Also, I like the pepsi clear, dill pickles dipped in cheese sauce, and wendy’s french fries dipped in the chocolate frosty. A friend of mine made bacon vodka by cooking bacon and placing it in a mason jar with a bottle of vodka for two weeks. I told him he should make a BL-Tini :) I never worked up the nerve to try it though. I think strangeness runs in my family though, one sister likes pickles on pizza and the other likes pickles and french fries on buttered toast. Perhaps we just have a thing for pickles. I do salt my watermelon, cantaloupe, etc…I think it brings out the sweetness in the fruit, just like you would when baking. Reading about all the spicy foods is giving me gift ideas for a friend who LOVES everything spicy…he has a collection of probably 30 hot sauces, and that wasn’t enough, so I bought him a hot sauce kit so he could make some that was even hotter.

They encouraged me to try it, claiming “it’s not that bad.” Naive idiot that I was, I trusted them. Oh. My. GAG!! It was the most disgustingly bitter nasty stuff I think has ever been invented. Ever. 195. When I was growing up there was an ice cream shop near my house that had Pumpkin ice cream and licorice ice cream, but ONLY in October. My dad took pity on me and for that one month every year we got ice cream like 4 nights a week. Then when I was about 12 I had the flu but still insisted on my orange-and-black ice creams (1 scoop of each). After throwing up all that colorful glory (and the SMELL of the licorice!) I could not eat it ever again. The shop closed the next year. I still feel guilty…
     The one time I ever came across a musk flavored snack, I was remindedly vividly of the night I’d rolled over, half asleep, found my face smooshed up against husband-fur, and assuming it was his chest, licked it.

     Heinz once made purple ketchup. I tried to eat it on a hot dog once, and I had to scrape it off. It looked like purple goo on my food!

     I live in the Midwest, and we had cicada season a couple years ago. Some people were eating cicadas, raw and grilled!

     I went to Columbus once, and in a local town there was an ice cream shop. They have very good ice cream, but what I found most interesting there is that they had a pretzel cone! It may sound gross, but with the right flavor it was delicious!

207. On the buttered popcorn jelly bellies, I tried one in Target today (don’t tell) and I had to spit it into a napkin. Probably the most disgusting candy I’ve ever had. (Actually, that’s not saying much.) I also tried a dark chocolate one… I can’t get enough of real dark chocolate, but the jelly bean tasted like artificial Hershey’s chocolate lollipops (which are NOT good, I assure you). On the other hand, Very Cherry is Very Good. =)
