Now this is what I call outsider art: no pencils, brushes or paints of any kind necessary, just that famously frustrating kiddie toy, the Etch-a-Sketch, on which it’s a feat of coordination to even make a smoothly curving line. Of course, just as Everest once looked like an impossible climb to mountaineers, fine artists have begun to challenge to wooly heights of the Etch. Witness some of their best efforts:
Etch-a-Sketch master George Vlosich III’s pieces, which take him up to 60 hours to complete, have taken him places he never thought he’d go, including the White House. Check out a video of him creating a “quickie” portrait of NBA star LeBron James in just five hours (thanks for the link, Neatorama):
Artist Ron Morse focuses more on fantasy scenes and landscapes, like this one (we bet the clouds were the hardest part):
No survey of Etch-a-Sketch artists would be complete, though, without mention of Tim George, also known as “Mr. Etch-a-Sketch.” He got started Sketching when his four-year-old daughter was in the hospital following an open heart surgery, and began doodling on the Sketch to entertain her, and found that he was really, really good at it (sorry about the ad at the beginning):
my friend david is also quite the etcher. check out his site at etchbeyond.com.

I used to wear my Etch-a-Sketches out, I loved playing with them so much. I was born in Ohio so I thought it was cool they said Ohio Art on them. One of my Fav things to do was to “black out” the whole screen so that I could see all of the inside mechanics of how it worked. I read somewhere that the Etch-a-Sketch artists drill a hole in the back and drain out all of the “dust” so that it can’t be tipped upside down and erased. I don’t blamed them after 5-60 hours of work put into it *I* would too!

There are a few of us out here. Check out my page and let me know what you think. Personally, I think mine are the most intricately detailed sketches you’l find.
