I'm can't speak for any other state, but here in Michigan convicted felons are automatically disqualified from jury duty. Additionally, anyone who can show that serving on a jury would cause an undue hardship (e.g. loss of income for the sole provider of a family) can excuse themselves before the jury selection begins. I believe that other exemptions exist (documented schizophrenia, etc.), both here and in other states.

I'm not sure if this is still true, but a U.S. Serviceman not stationed in their home state is exempt from jury duty as well. This makes sense if you are deployed overseas, but it applies if you are stationed in another state as well.

For example, when I was in the service, I was stationed in Virginia, but my home state is California. So I was exempt from jury duty. If I had been stationed in California, I would have still been required to serve.
