How To Be More Productive, Feel Calmer, And Learn To Paint Happy Little Trees

Here’s the stat of the day: “An average worker’s functioning IQ falls ten points when distracted by ringing telephones and incoming emails. This drop in IQ is more than double the four-point drop seen following studies on the impact of smoking marijuana.” [Via IT Sneak]

In an effort to fight headspace invaders like instant messages, BlackBerry devices and invitations to joined your network on LinkedIn, I’ve found the ultimate relaxation tool: Bob Ross videos on YouTube.

If you’re not familiar with Bob Ross, read Mangesh’s backgrounder from December. If you want to hear his soothing voice – Bob Ross’ voice, not Mango’s – watch the videos below. I just let these play in another browser window.

I can feel my blood pressure dropping – in a relaxed way, not hypotension. If you have your own strange relaxation ritual, let us hear it.

  1. I love this guy!!! I use to watch him all the time on PBS. Very relaxing. Oddly I find the “defragmenter” on PCs relaxing in the same way.

Can watch it for hours…well, 10-15 minutes at least…

  2. Wow how very relaxing, i remember watching him during nap time as a kid

  3. I was having asthma problems when I started watching the first part, and by the time it was finished, I was fine. I didn’t even notice it go away.

  4. I remember this guy. He definitely had a soothing tone to his voice and when he talked he was so reassuring, too, in an uplifting kind of way.

  5. I’m totally zenning right now. I bet one could use Bob Ross instead of Zoloft and do just fine in the world…

mmm… fluff the clouds… happy little waves… zzzzzzz

  6. Aaah, Bob Ross and his happy little trees. My sister and I watched that every so often on Saturday afternoons.

  7. Whatever happened to Peapod, the pocket squirrel, Bob’s onscreen pet?

  8. wasnt there also a paintbrush painter…. the paintbrush would paint on the canvas just like Bob but he was more animated and active… anyone remember?
