I work in a building called Chelsea Market, which also is home to Food Network. Because of this, I am subjected to a disproportionate amount of advertising for Food Network programs. Don’t get me wrong, I like Food Network. This summer, the shows to which I most look forward are Big Love and The Next Food Network Star. However, when a large Ace of Cakes billboard went up across the street, I remember thinking it was a show I’d never watch.
But last week, my wife and I were relegated to the (TiVo-free) basement while we had some work done upstairs. In captivity, I didn’t change the channel when Ace of Cakes came on. Before I knew it, I was on the Charm City Cakes website, ogling their magical desserts. Here are a few of my favorites:

Haha! Gotta love ‘em all, especially the bacon cake. What better to wash that down than some beer?

I love Ace of Cakes! I know the cakes look awesome, but I wonder how they taste?

They look great, but I always think they must taste awful. Fondant (the edible icing/covering) is not very tasty, and I’d think it would take a very dense (therefore dry) cake to stand up to the shapes they’re making.

Note: I’m not touting these companies, but I figure while you’re looking at artistic cakes, you can look at cakes at these sites too:

www.marmaladecakecompany.com
www.elegantcheesecakes.com
www.colettescakes.com
I stumbled upon these links while admiring the meatcake at blackwidowbakery.com.

The Copenhagen cake disgusts me to no end. I used to dip in high school, and there’s nothing worse than accidentally swallowing snuff.

I’ve had the pleasure of sampling a bit of Charm City Cakes’ work. The cake is surprisingly good… not phenomenal, but good enough to keep the “It looks so good, it must taste like crap” naysayers (as I once was) at bay.
That said… dude, it’s cake. If you want to make a sculpture, just make a sculpture. My favorite episode “Ace of Cakes” was his flamingo “cake” for the zoo. Since they intended to keep the “cake” on permanent display, and it was too fragile anyway… he just used styrofoam and covered it in fondant. Proof positive that cake has very little to do with what this guy is actually doing.
