“Needles to say”

Needless to say, it's needless misspelt with one 's'.

Bill T is right Alice...we covered it last week and the usage is correct.

From Wikipedia...

"A deserted island (also known as a 'desert island') is simply any uninhabited island: the word "desert" in this context is an adjective meaning "desolate and sparsely occupied or unoccupied," and does not imply arid desert climate. "

Do a google search on Shackleton. There are some good summaries of his expedition. Or check out one of the books written about it. His story of survival is unbelievable. His management/decision skills were fantastic. Read about him a few years ago.

Wasn't the topic of "desert island" covered last week? It's legit, people. Give it a rest.

I will admit that scurvy is something I would never expect to die of in Antarctica. It makes sense, but it's just not something I equate with that sort of expedition.

Actually Antarctica is a desert.

Google "Antarctica desert". The second link to National Geographic is pretty good.

Deserts are defined by annual precipitation, not by available water or average temperatures.

Tragic story! However, the photograph hardly looks like a "desert" island - a DESERTED island, perhaps. There can be deserted desert islands, but a whole lot more deserted islands of various ecosystems. (And why do people picture "desert" islands are tropical? Water is usually found in the tropics.)
