One possible (maybe) way to "blow-up" a whale carcass on shore would be to stack a LARGE amount of explosive on the land-ward side of the whale. At least one ton (2000 lbs.) of explosive - maybe more would be needed. Then bury the explosive and the top side of the whale with at least 3 or 4 tons of sand. THEN set off the explosive - with luck (and enough TNT) this should focus the bast towards the sea and most of the gibblets(ick) would head to the sea.
The mistake made in the video was assuming the blast would blow to sea - explosives explode in a SPHERE and are restrained(focused) by objects(masses) around them. The crew in the video just assumed a "big stick" would knock the whale into the sea - instead they got whale gumbo everywhere...

Actually the best solution in my opinion is to haul them to the western coast of alaska and drop them on the landscape (in the summer if possible) when the arctic ice has melted, as hungry hungry polar bears will be able to smell the meat for hundreds of miles and many families will come feed on the carcass all summer.
great way to save the polar bears!

Apparently, a recent trip to the whale museum in Husavík, Iceland informed me that the Icelandic phrase for 'windfall' or 'lottery win' is the same as that for 'beached whale'...

Eeeew gross!!! but what a hoot! After seeing the film I just thought of 2001: A Space Odyssey- with the scene where the apes encounter a giant dark monolith, descending into screaming and destruction. Here start people curiously poking at the giant dark carcass with sticks and then deciding to do something cataclysmic, dynamite yeah! The pink mist showering the beach and then huge black oily chunks coming down like brimstone. What a laugh! I don't think they'll do the explosives like that again- no sir! This time there will be volunteers to cut the next bad whale up!
