Technically Rachel Jackson was never First Lady. She died prior to Andrew Jackson’s inauguration. He maintained to his death it was the media’s witch-hunt that had killed her.

Rachel Jackson was, indeed, the first first lady to obtain a divorce. The problem was that she married Andrew before it was final, thereby creating a technical bigamy for which Washington society never let anyone forget.
