"[In the jungle]... there is some sort
of a harmony, it is the harmony of overwhelming and collective murder."

I love it, still.

I'm a documentary junkie as well, and will have to check this out. Do you recommend watching this before or after Fitzcarraldo as I haven't seen either yet.

Also, another great documentary that came out about a year to two years ago, about the american south, is the incredibly creepy Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus. Check it out.

I will recommend Herzog's Grizzly Man which came out a couple of years ago. The film is about Timothy Treadwell, a man who spent 13 summers in the Alaskan wilderness, filming and living with grizzly bears, until he was eaten by a bear in 2003 (it's not shown in the film). Herzog uses interviews and Treadwell's films as the subject of an inquiry into civilization vs nature. Some of the themes in this post carry over into Grizzly Man and that makes it intelligent and compelling.

I would recommend, maybe as a companion piece, "My Best Fiend," which profiles Herzog's relationship with Klaus Kinski. I believe it was during the filming of "Fitzcarraldo" that the Peruvian natives mentioned above made a private offer to Herzog to kill Kinski, who was constantly flying into manic rages, walking off the set, and generally delaying filming even further, etc.; basically, they didn't like Kinski, who was a bit of a flamboyant nutball, but genuinely feared Herzog because he was so calm, cold and focused.

My Aunt and I watched "Burden of Dreams" but I think I was to young to keep my attention focused that long, but I do remember some parts. O yeah and may I still suggest "Super Size Me."
