It’s now official: Ridley Scott is doing the Monopoly movie. I’m thinking lots of smoke/dry ice with prodigal/murderous sons. Ridley muses here:
Monopoly is still the most popular board game — I might be misquoting! — in the world. So it’s really finding the universe for that game. Because clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family — the funny way it brings out, particularly when your uncle suddenly gets Park Lane and — in England, we have Park Lane, Mayfair and Barclay Square, what’s it in America? Park and Madison? So you watch people change. You’re witness to Jekyll and Hyde. Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film.
Perhaps when Anti-Monopoly finally catches on, David Cronenberg will direct. I’m thinking lots of schizoid monopolists stuck in shame spirals. If anyone wants to attempt the treatment, here are some breakdowns.
that’s insane… I did love the Clue movie, so maybe there’s hope.

So, basically, the Monopoly movie promises scene after scene towards the end that involve screwing your friends over with ridiculous rents for one night’s stay, making fun of them and gawking as you pass by them locked up in jail, and making under-the-table deals between best friends that cause someone to leave the room crying and yelling about cheaters. Also, the movie’s going to have to be about 4 hours long in order to really live up to the experience of the board game.

Does the movie start with people fighting over who gets to be
(use) the little race car as their marker? ….[my experience]

if it’s not 14+ hours long, it ain’t the real thing.

I used to play against the computer all the time. I found greed is the undoing of it. I allowed the computer to buy almost every property while I may have only 1-2 complete address. The computer would end up having to mortgage everything to pay my rent and I always won. When I won I didn’t sit back and laugh at the screen though!
