There is a grave in the cemetery in my town which says DABNEY: The husband of Jane. There are no dates, no first name, and no Jane is buried anywhere near it

Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, patriarch of the Hatfields who famously fueded with the McCoys, is buried in a family plot in Sarah Ann, WV. He paid $3500 for a life-size Italian marble statue of himself as his grave marker.

Frank Philips, founder of Philips Petroleumm Company--now ConocoPhilips, buried his wife in a tomb cut into the rock bluff alongside the river running through their ranch called Woolaroc near Bartlesville, OK. The ranch is now a tourist attraction and you can see the face if the tomb from a road across the river. It was said that she had a fear of being buried alive. As a result a live telephone line was installed in her tomb...just in case.

i grew up with a fascination for boneyards. my first forray into one was at 8,my father took me to st. louis in new orleans, it was the most interesting place i had ever been. since then, i have been to many famous cemetaries/churchyards. the older ones in okinawa are interesting, most are caves and the family comes to clean and commune on july 17th's obon festival. also, in my teens, i spent many long nights chasing ghosts in the churchyards of London. in my early 20's i was a guide for the "cemetary stroll" through macon, ga's rosehill cemetary(where the grave of duane alman is found along with 200 years of macons richest deceased), ive also lead tours of bonaventure cemetary in savannah, ga. my favorite cemetary is a family one in iowa. it belongs to a mr. blood, and has the whole poem of "as you are now, i once was. as i am now, so shall you be". it's located in a deserted area, near a crumbling mansion, and the light plays tricks on you among the trees. as for the "black angel" in iowa city, it's made of bronze, and has tarnished over the years. it's hands are missing now, but it used to hold fresh roses and wildflowers brought by visitors.

I recently visited Fort Rosecrans National Cemetary in Point Loma, CA - very reverent place. What struck me is that the deceased family members names and information are inscribed on the back of many of the tombstones. As the space for burial plots is obviously crowded, I found myself wondering if all the family members share the same space.

In my hometown of Montgomery, AL, there is a big, big cemetery called "Greenwood" and way in the back there is a section roped off with a little gate by which you enter. It has a sign in front of the rope gate that reads "Babyland" and that's where all the babies who died at birth are buried. Also, same cemetery, there is a headstone engraved with the last name "Slaughter."

I've decided to let my geek flag fly whenever I pass on. My headstone is going to read: GAME OVER. Below that will be "Save & Continue" and "Save & Quit" with a little cursor next to "Save & Quit"
