My husbands family insists on using them whenever writing out a card or note inside a card.
Example -
(on the outside of envelope) "JOE"
(inside)
Happy Birthday "Joe"!
Hope you have a "great" birthday. Don't worry about
turning "40"! Eat some cake for me.
Love "Mom"

The date is also written on every piece of paper that exchanges hands.

I also knew a girl in school who would say
Quote-Unquote
nearly every time she spoke.

I think some are taking this to a whole new level. Chill out and enjoy life. Unless you are correcting an English paper I don't think you should get your panties in a bunch over spelling, grammar or punctuation errors. Pointing out a mistake to someone and calling them stupid will probably get you an obscene gesture more often than a gracious thank you.

On most school buses around here (Long Island, NY) is a sign that says:

"We" Want You To Work For Us

You would think a SCHOOL bus would know how to use quotes!

The reason that the hyphen is not inserted between the "ly" adverb and the adjective is that it is not needed for clarity - that's the main reason you'd add a hyphen between an adverb and an adjective, to make things clearer. It's not wrong, strictly speaking, either way, because the meaning is still well preserved.

i dont no what all this fuss over "punctuation" is all-about. it seems to me that "proof-reading" a restaurants menu seems a little anal. Frankly, eye think "spelling" is a little over-rated, two.

I'm on the side of Betsy and Kent. It may be that way according to AP, but that's just the standard they've adopted, nothing more.

I gave my Strunk & White to my daughter to take to college, so I can't look it up, but the way I learned it says it should have the hyphen when used as a compound adjective.
