When I was 6, I clearly remember some Jack Hannah video cassettes we watched, with one segment featuring Alex. Of course I was always struck by it, especially our whole family have been bird lovers for longer than I can remember (literally- our blue-fronted amazon parrot was bought before I or my younger sister were born).

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of owning birds is the fact that, while they live much longer than most pets, they are still fragile and are affected quickly by (often untreatable) illnesses. Imagine having spent time with an animal for decades, and they suddenly go.

I was so sorry to hear that Alex had died. I've read magazine articles about him and have enjoyed seeing him on TV. He was an amazing bird.
