The Most Humiliating Scandals in Sports

The sports pages are looking more and more like the police blotter, with wild charges from dogfighting to grand theft memorabilia. Baseball’s greatest home run hitter is tied to performance-enhancing drugs; football’s greatest coach has been branded a cheater. Oh, and NBA games are fixed.

But sports scandals are nothing new. How well do you remember incidents from yesteryear? Take the mental_floss quiz, then let us know your batting average.

  1. I (obviously) know little about sports. This will make y’all feel better about your scores - 2/10 correct. Yippee!

  2. 70%

Thus proving Woody Hayes was a complete d-bag.

  3. woo hoo, I got 1, sure it was a guess, but it still counts!

  4. 2 out of 10 - wow!

I REALLY liked the format of this quiz - I didn’t have to keep scrolling up and down to see all the optional answers, like in past quizzes. I say stick with this format!

  5. Oh man, I also got 1. When I saw the question that I got right near the top, I was just praying that Hadyen Fry (aka pretty much the closest you can get to perfection without attaining god-like status) hadn’t been the one to punch that kid in the throat. Man! Another reason OSU really bites it big.

  6. Ok, I admit that I am a huge sports dork. Let’s just be clear though that I have a brain for stupid useless facts that don’t seem to go away…ever, no matter how hard I try.

90% (I missed the McLaren story…too recent to have committed to memory)

  7. LAMERS!, I go 80% correct and don’t even consider myself sports minded. Don’t you people pay attention to what is happening in the world.

  8. Four out of ten. I thought that was awful, til I saw the other comments!

  9. A whopping zero!

Just goes to show how little I pay attention to sports (except hockey, after all, I am Canadaian).

  10. 8/10. Missed the car racing one and the paralympics one.

  11. 10/10 and the only sport I actually watch these days is soccer.

  12. 8 of 10 …. which just demonstrates that I still have the ability to pass tests on subjects I know nothing about….. honestly, I only “knew” two or three … the rest were just lucky guesses.

  13. 10 out 10.

God, I must be a freak.

  14. I got the two right that I remembered. The eight that I guessed on, I got wrong. Of course, since I only watch or pay any kind of otherwise attention to football, it is not surprising that the two I got right were football related.
