The ‘manure’ story actually occurred when former first lady Eleanore Roosevelt asked her succusor, Bess Truman, to get the new president to use a term different from manure. It’s not hard to imagine what word HST used. botz

My favorite LBJ story: an offended woman asked Lady Bird if she could get Lyndon to stop using the word “manure”. The reply: “Do you have any idea how long it’s taken me to GET him to say ‘manure’?”

I’d read someplace (sorry, can’t find my source) that the term “johnson” was derived from the iron bar connecting the wheels on the old steam locomotives. The obvious physical similarity, plus the piston-like movement of the johnson bar made for an pretty apt nickname, I think.

In doing some quick research on the term “johnson” (meaning penis), I found several references, including the false one that it came from LBJ.

An online etymological dictionary sheds some light:
“penis,” 1863, perhaps related to British slang John Thomas, which has the same meaning (1887).

I think there’s a bit of humor here.

The term “johnson” pre-dates LBJ!

It might refer back to an early slang dictionary written by a Dr. Johnson.

In no way, however, is it related to LBJ. And he famously did not unzip to show his member (as I recall) but to display his appendectomy scar.

The above intern’s post was meant I think to be humorous, but this is how all those emails originate that have to be checked at Snopes!
