Crimes of the Hamburglar
by Becky - October 4, 2007 - 5:40 PM

eHamburglar, one of Ronald McDonald’s original McDonaldland posse, was first voiced by Howard Morris, and thereafter played in commercials alternately by Frankie Delfino and Gaetano Vicini, aka Tom Vicini e(also a stunt double who paints religious murals–the one pictured is a piece he co-created for a Milwaukee church in 1986). There have been complaints that an icon like Hamburglar isn’t positive for kids, but he’s been infantilized over the years so that his penchant is, I suppose, forgivable; however, here are some hamburger-related crimes that weren’t laughed off:

  • In 2004 a 6-ft Hamburglar statue was stolen right out of a McDonald’s
  • Just last month a Georgia police officer was served a hamburger he considered “too salty” & consequently arrested the 20 year-old McDonald’s employee for misdemeanor reckless conduct
  • Ok–this one isn’t a crime, but I don’t think this woman wants to hear that–she called 911 over a dispute with her Burger King order; classic. From the dispatcher (poor thing): “No ma’am, I’m not sending the deputies down there over a cheeseburger.”

  1. Are you sure that last one’s not a crime? Calling 911 with a nonemergency situation? (Ok, maybe it’s a crime only if they do it repeatedly.)

  2. I know it’s a felony if someone dies due to a response to a call that turns out to be false. This call was so ridiculous that there’s been speculation over its veracity, but the PD has confirmed it was an actual call. I used to know some dispatchers who say people really do call in for the most random, non-emergency stuff–I guess the branding of 311 and such takes time…

  3. “There have been complaints that an icon like Hamburglar isn’t positive for kids…”

MD missed a marketing opportunity to try Hamburglar across a series of commercials. Like Law and Order across 30 second spots.

Hamburglar was one of my favorite product-promoting characters growing up. Second to Booberry. When Hamburglar stopped showing up in commercials I missed him and in protest began my vegan lifestyle. Now that I know what became of him I can eat pork ribs again.

  4. There are some Booberry fruit rollups out. If you’re a fan, Booberry has been updated a little.
