Cassandra, thank you for the informative and fascinating article. I have personally never experienced Dubai, but I always truly marvel at its architecture and sheer opulence. However, I find it rather disconcerting (and disgusting, honestly) that all of this granduer appears to be a result of what seems to be a slave society. Furthermore, in order to satiate the needs and desires of Dubai's visitors and residents, the area's environment is apparently being devastated. A very informative (and lengthy, but well worth the read) article on this can be found on the UK's "The Independent" website (found through a quick search on Digg for "Dubai"). It is a tragedy that the numerous issues with Dubai are not discussed more frequently.

hey stew, what usually happens with a building is that it's bigger boxes on smaller boxes (generally) but burj dubai will be three buildings but together, kinda like a tripod. only one of the buildings will be the full height while the next is shorter and the final will be the shortest, but still preatty freakin tall.

Great article! I can't decide whether to spend a week in the Hydropolis or buy a piece of The World. Has anyone taken Australia yet? How about Antarctica? Lichtenstein?

Stew, there have been a few shows on TLC or Discovery (maybe Travel) Channel that discuss these phenomenal undertakings. It blows my mind to think about what goes into attempting some of these projects. This is definitely an example of thinking outside the box!

Thanks, Cassandra. Great writing!

I just returned from a recent trip to Dubai in September. It was quite hot, but an amazing experience.

I stayed admit the construction near the Burj Dubai. As a western woman traveling, at times, by myself, it was a humbling experience to feel stared at and ignored, at the same time.

That said, it was a transformative experience for me.

Since this is mental floss. This article got me thinking. I don't know much about the geology of Dubai, but how do they plan to anchor the 2700 foot tall Burj Dubai on a foundation in sand?

It's ambitious ingenuity like this that keeps this world in a constant upward motion, i must say i digg this article not only because of the interesting content surrounding the architectual triumphs in Dubai, but because of the elaborate descriptions of each attraction that spoke with such imagery that it almost rendered the pictures of each place redundant. The author of this article definitely has a masterful grip on the paint brush of rhetoric and uses it to paint surreal masterpieces of imagination and excitement
