Weekend Genius Challenge: Solve these presidential anagrams and win a T-shirt!
by Sandy Wood - October 13, 2007 - 6:00 AM

Last weekend’s puzzle was solved fairly quickly, but this one should take a bit longer. Yes, you’ll have to work for that free T-shirt this time around!

Following are nonsensical anagrams of the full names of 40 of the 42 men who have held the office of President of the United States. Your task? Identify all 40, and then name the two presidents that we left off the list.

The first person to respond with all 40 in the correct order (and the 2 leftovers) will win the T-shirt of his or her choice from the mental_floss store. Submit your answers by commenting on this post (and be sure to mention what style of T-shirt you’d prefer). We’ll reveal the correct answers on Monday!

In any case, this was most enjoyable. Many thanks for the history refresher course

  17. In my defense, I did not read the directions completely before submitting my answer. I didn’t realize the prize went to the FIRST person to submit the answers (though that makes more sense, now that I think on it). It didn’t take me very long to do, but I was still definitely not the first. So, no T shirt for me.
However, it was really fun. I’ve been scouring the net for good anagram websites, with anagrams as complex as these, ripe for the solving. All I can find are the one-word dealies. Know of any good sites? Do another one of these sometime soon, it was fun!

  18. Well, I’m getting sort of optimistic about my 7:22 entry. Still waiting for the official results, though. Would I be out of line to state a tshirt preference of Lady Macbeth Hand Soap in XL?

    Fun test.

Missing were James Knox Polk and John Tyler Jr.
Also missing from the 43 presidents is Steven Grover Cleveland who was President in non concurrent terms. I believe that I should win due to the fact that 3 presidents would be missing from 43 and not 2. LOL. Cut me some slack guys and give a military vet some kind of consolation prize. LOL
