I remember reading in “History of Salt” that tourists used to enjoy riding on the burlap sacks and sliding down the salt mines in some years past – 1600s? Earlier? Certainly a relative worthy of mentioning in the origins of the roller coaster.

Lake Placid, NY (home to two Winter Olympics) used to have an ice slide that went way out on to the lake. I guess people had to walk back.
