If the waltz was considered daring, the polka was even more outrageous. It became very popular in France and the French king of Mexico, Maximillian (?) imported it into Mexico. It moved into the US and suffered condemnation from pulpits because not only did people touch, but they would get feverish from all the quick movements. Adherents would actually become flushed with exertion. Sinful! Even today Mexican Mariachis play more polkas than any other bands, including Polish ones.
