They also love hockey in the winter. One year we saw about a dozen kids, in the subdued-yet-vivid black pants and deep blue shirt combination, with suspenders and hats neatly in place, playing hockey on a frozen pond in a pasture.

hahaha...Amish drive-by...hee hee

Sara, the horses hooves go clop clop as they approach, then the gunshot, then the clop clop again as they make their getaway. Eh, not as funny when you explain it.

I lived in York County for a while. Not many Amish there but we shopped in Lancaster frequently. One other note, when our house was being built the roofers were Amish. Those guys worked harder than I'd seen anyone else on the job site work. I dare say if the whole crew would have been Amish our house would have been done months earlier!

What I want to know is there such a thing as a bad Amish carpenter? I work in a home improvement store and our biggest customer is an Amish contractor. He's also supposedly the #3 contractor companywide.

DB- I live in Central Ohio, and the Mennonites (or any 'English') will drive the Amish for work, shopping, vacation. I know first hand of an Amish framing crew from Belle Center who hire a guy and his van to drive them here to Plain City (about and hour)- and he also works for them.

My sister went to Pennsylvania once with a college classmate of hers. She bought my mom An Amish sun hat. She said the Amish customers kept glaring at her. Allen, I don't get the joke, but I keep laughing at it. I think it's because of the capitalized bang.

One little-known fact is that some Amish are testing gene therapy for their children, who often inherit a metabolic disorder.

(Hmmm . . . no links. I guess you'll have to do a search for "Amish gene therapy" to get the NY Times article.)

I visited Lancaster County a few years back while driving across PA. I loved it as well.

I really wanted to eat a cheeseburger in Paradise while I was there, but we couldn't find any restaurants in that town. Instead, I resorted to eating a cheeseburger in Intercourse.

I delivered furniture in Amish communities around northern Indiana and southern Michigan for several years and one thing I noticed is that Amish never buy king or queen sized beds, only full and twin sizes. No idea why, but I never saw an exception.

@Linda:

My guess is that because of Good Friday, the Amish were in church, and spending the day in celebration of the holiday.

I live in Lancaster County (about 5 minutes outside of Intercourse and 2 minutes from those outlets that someone mentioned in an earlier comment), and A.J., I've also been intrigued when I've passed an Amish farm on a Sunday afternoon and have seen at least 10 volleyball nets strung all together, with multiple teams playing at once, all in silence.
