I don’t tend to think of myself as being particularly tied to brands, but after reading my friend Lyza’s Brand Affinity post, it occurred to me that I might have a few brand affinities. I define brand affinity as any special connection to a line of products, and they tend to fall into two categories: first, there are brands that I seek out when buying a new widget (as in, “Need a new mouse, and my old Microsoft mouse was great…”); second, there are brands that I actively follow to see what new widgets I can buy (ahem, iPhone). I shamelessly buy new Apple stuff, I’m a longtime TiVo nerd (I’m on my third box), and I’m an inveterate Amazon shopper (I have the annual prepaid two-day shipping thing…). In fact, the longer I think about it, the more brands start to float to the surface: Nikon cameras, B&W speakers, Nivea skin care products, Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs…uh oh. Apparently I’ve signed on to a bunch of brands without even noticing it.
Commenters on Lyza’s blog listed some more brands that I see in many of my friends’ lives: Nintendo, LL Bean backpacks, All-Clad, Herman Miller, Burt’s Bees, and so on. Brand affinities are everywhere, and they extend to art and entertainment — I subscribe to several McSweeney’s products, I watch everything the Coen Brothers make, and we’ve discussed authors I’ve “finished.” So here’s a discussion topic for today: what brand affinities do you have? Also: what little-known brands would you recommend?
You have to try World’s Finest Chocolate Continental Almonds. These are the best chocolate covered almonds I have ever eaten. Crunchy with a smooth chocolate finish. Yum. Yum.

Cutco knives! There are so many “trendy” kitchen tools out there, and “designer knives” have become a big marketing schtick. There are some good popular performers out there (global, henckels, wusthof) but the dreaded celebrity-chef endorsed products just defeat the purpose. There is nothing better than a Cutco! These knives have been around forever. They are solid, well made and feel good in your hand. Cutco will also sharpen them for free, for as long as you own them! Can’t beat that! Racheal Ray be damned, I will never succumb to your orange-handled monstrosoties!

I think lots of people disclaim any brand loyalty because they think it makes them a tool of advertisers or marketers. But most people’s loyalty comes from positive experiences with the product. In that sense brands do just what they are supposed to: they help a consumer find a reliable (to them, anyway) product.
Here’s mine: Viva paper towels (far and away the best - try it); TiVo; Clarks shoes; Cheerios; McDonald’s (yes it’s garbage, but it is consistently delicious); Costco; Nintendo; zappos.com

I love NJ pizza! I don’t live there anymore, but when I did, you noticed that everyone had their pizza place loyalty (all REAL places, not chains!) and depending who was ordering, they stayed “brand” loyal. I am going there for Thanksgiving and I’ve already called Michael at Michael’s Pizzeria to tell him to get ready because I will likely be molto affamato!!! (VERY hungry!)
Oh and Erin (the one who likes Bareminerals)- does that stuff really work? I’ve been too lazy to try it but I have the same problems you mentioned.
Could it be that I am developing a new brand loyalty over a comment section of a brand loyalty post? Weird!

I have brand anti-affinity (what’s the opposite of affinity?) towards Starbucks.
Its so convenient but with their ridiculous pricing, nasty coffee and obnoxious naming system I avoid it like the plague.

Kelly, Bareminerals is awesome. I’ve been using their foundation for…. five years(?) and I can’t imagine I’ve used anything else.
It takes some getting used to becuase it feels like you’re wearing no makeup at all. But it’s SO much better than caking liquid foundation all over your face.
The ONLY complaint I would have is that it doesn’t stay on as well as other foundations do. I usually do a quick touch-up at lunch and again in the evening if I go anywhere.

–Several people have mentioned Bare Minerals, but I have had better luck with the Jane Iredale brand. Can’t make myself go back to any other, despite the fact it is expensive and a bit harder to find.
–LUSH brand cosmetics. Again, a bit more expensive and harder for me to get–right now I can ONLY get it online–but with the skin issues I have, it is the best for me. I am really in love with several of their solid shampoo bars! If you take good care of them, they seem to last FOREVER.

So loyal to Blimpie (are they even around anymore?) that I would go there after working at Subway all day in my Subway clothes. The Blimpie people loved it. Porto Rico Imports !!!
I love these folks! They sell fine coffee & teas of the world along with mugs and other coffee/tea paraphenalia.
They are family owned and operated and have been in business since 1907. They have only three locations (all in NYC) but have a website (www.portorico.com) where you can order anything they sell in the stores.
They are the only coffeehouse I know of that sells organic, fair trade, bird-friendly coffees at a reasonable price (about $7/pound).
Call me crazy, but I won’t buy my coffee anywhere else. And for the holidays, I usually buy about 10 pounds to give as gifts.
