Brand Affinity
by Chris Higgins - November 15, 2007 - 9:31 AM

Nintendo Controller TattooI don’t tend to think of myself as being particularly tied to brands, but after reading my friend Lyza’s Brand Affinity post, it occurred to me that I might have a few brand affinities. I define brand affinity as any special connection to a line of products, and they tend to fall into two categories: first, there are brands that I seek out when buying a new widget (as in, “Need a new mouse, and my old Microsoft mouse was great…”); second, there are brands that I actively follow to see what new widgets I can buy (ahem, iPhone). I shamelessly buy new Apple stuff, I’m a longtime TiVo nerd (I’m on my third box), and I’m an inveterate Amazon shopper (I have the annual prepaid two-day shipping thing…). In fact, the longer I think about it, the more brands start to float to the surface: Nikon cameras, B&W speakers, Nivea skin care products, Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs…uh oh. Apparently I’ve signed on to a bunch of brands without even noticing it.

Commenters on Lyza’s blog listed some more brands that I see in many of my friends’ lives: Nintendo, LL Bean backpacks, All-Clad, Herman Miller, Burt’s Bees, and so on. Brand affinities are everywhere, and they extend to art and entertainment — I subscribe to several McSweeney’s products, I watch everything the Coen Brothers make, and we’ve discussed authors I’ve “finished.” So here’s a discussion topic for today: what brand affinities do you have? Also: what little-known brands would you recommend?

  1. You have to try World’s Finest Chocolate Continental Almonds. These are the best chocolate covered almonds I have ever eaten. Crunchy with a smooth chocolate finish. Yum. Yum.

  2. Cutco knives! There are so many “trendy” kitchen tools out there, and “designer knives” have become a big marketing schtick. There are some good popular performers out there (global, henckels, wusthof) but the dreaded celebrity-chef endorsed products just defeat the purpose. There is nothing better than a Cutco! These knives have been around forever. They are solid, well made and feel good in your hand. Cutco will also sharpen them for free, for as long as you own them! Can’t beat that! Racheal Ray be damned, I will never succumb to your orange-handled monstrosoties!

  3. Record lables, im a dj and will get anythign on sertain lables i know its different to brands but i feel my self hovering over lables such adn min_s and anticon even though anticon has a lot of poo as well il still sift through it knowing il find summit good

  4. I think lots of people disclaim any brand loyalty because they think it makes them a tool of advertisers or marketers. But most people’s loyalty comes from positive experiences with the product. In that sense brands do just what they are supposed to: they help a consumer find a reliable (to them, anyway) product.

Here’s mine: Viva paper towels (far and away the best - try it); TiVo; Clarks shoes; Cheerios; McDonald’s (yes it’s garbage, but it is consistently delicious); Costco; Nintendo; zappos.com

  5. –Birkenstocks - I’m on my 5th or 6th pair. I never remember to get them resoled until it’s too late.
–Coca-Cola Products - Cherry Zero specifically
–Jack’s frozen pizza - cheap and tasty

  19. H&M- always stop there first for new clothes. Lovelovelove that store.

Lean Pockets- I’m lazy and commute almost 2 hrs in the morning, so a nice frozen Four Cheese Lean Pocket is way too easy to grab and stick in my lunchbox.

  20. Guinness

  21. Bonne Bell Dr. Pepper LipSmackers. I can’t guess how many tubes of it I’ve bought in the last few years…has to be nearly 100 by now.

  22. Bareminerals for make up is the first thing that came to mind. I credit this make-up as the cure from my early-adult acne and horribly oily skin.

    :)

  25. Rao’s marinara sauce.

Costs more than other brands but it’s SO worth it, especially if you’re originally from New York and can’t find any good italian food!

  26. Once a year I buy my Reef flip flops to wear for the next 12 months.

  27. it was only reading through other people’s lists that I started to realize that I have more brand affinities than I thought!

  31. Oh…and Hendrick’s Gin

  32. I love NJ pizza! I don’t live there anymore, but when I did, you noticed that everyone had their pizza place loyalty (all REAL places, not chains!) and depending who was ordering, they stayed “brand” loyal. I am going there for Thanksgiving and I’ve already called Michael at Michael’s Pizzeria to tell him to get ready because I will likely be molto affamato!!! (VERY hungry!)

Oh and Erin (the one who likes Bareminerals)- does that stuff really work? I’ve been too lazy to try it but I have the same problems you mentioned.

Could it be that I am developing a new brand loyalty over a comment section of a brand loyalty post? Weird!

  33. Wow. I am a brand-whore. I had no idea. Until now.

    Food
-Zapp’s Cajun Dill Gator-Tators Potato Chips
    -Krema Peanut Butter

I am also an Etsy-whore, an UncommonGoods-whore and I would buy (if I could) anything Maggie Mason recommends at Mightygoods.

The funny thing is, I don’t shop often, but for groceries.

  34. I have brand anti-affinity (what’s the opposite of affinity?) towards Starbucks.
Its so convenient but with their ridiculous pricing, nasty coffee and obnoxious naming system I avoid it like the plague.

    I know this isn’t a brand but….
Any movie with Brad Pitt in it is a good bet.
He (or his agent) has a knack for picking good scripts. Plus, he aint hard on the eyes!

  35. Kelly, Bareminerals is awesome. I’ve been using their foundation for…. five years(?) and I can’t imagine I’ve used anything else.

It takes some getting used to becuase it feels like you’re wearing no makeup at all. But it’s SO much better than caking liquid foundation all over your face.

The ONLY complaint I would have is that it doesn’t stay on as well as other foundations do. I usually do a quick touch-up at lunch and again in the evening if I go anywhere.

  36. Dr Pepper
    Mrs. Baird’s
    Blue Bell

Hmm…these are all Texas brands. I guess that says a lot about me and my upbringing.

  37. My grocery brand affinity is usually ‘what’s on sale this week,’ or if nothing is, ‘what costs the least.’ Ah, the life of a graduate student. Oh, except for milk. I always buy the local co-op brand because I want to support local dairies and encourage agriculture.

I have to admit I have an affinity for Dixon Ticonderoga Number 2 pencils. A fresh box of those makes my artist’s heart leap for joy.

  38. Blue Bell ice cream.

There is no alternative. As a child, I attempted to bring it from Texas to Alabama after discovering there wasn’t Blue Bell in Alabama. Now there is though….no more melty disasters.

and Rainbow flip flops, Cheetos brand Cheese Puffs, and no generic brand cereals

  39. The only thing I can think of that I’m totally brand loyal is tuna fish. I like Starkist. Nothing else will do. Period.

  40. I believe two of the best examples of brand affinity would be xerox and kleenex

  41. Just thought of some more.

    Food
–Mike-sell’s potato chips - mostly in the Midwest
–Tim’s Cascade chips - Pac NW
–Jif Extra Crunchy - I will accept no substitute

–Meijer’s - Wal-Mart is avoided at all costs
–McDonald’s - When in a foreign land it tastes like home, greasy, salty, and chock full of hormones
–American Airlines - The flight attendants are sooo much nicer than on United

  42. Costco
    Whole Foods
    Google
    REI
    Rold Gold pretzels
    Tropicana Orange Juice (no pulp!)
    Izze (so very tasty)

    mental_floss
    Zebra Sarasa pens
    Valve Software
    Stride (gum)
    Forgotten English daily calendar

Bareminerals - I, too have discovered the miracle that is Bareminerals.
    Apple (computers, mp3 players)
    Sony (cameras, TVs)
    Subway - I hate Quiznos.
    Diet Coke
    Oreos
    Clinique
    Grey Poupon

And Lindsay, I am also an Etsy and UncommonGoods whore :).

  44. Those of us who work in publishing want readers to get into brand awareness too (so far, Penguin Classics stands out in book brand awareness).
So check out the publisher or imprint of your favorite reading materials and let that help you find other books to love.

  45. BareMinerals
    Crest
Trader Joe’s if Des Moines had one =( I used to exclusively shop TJ’s when we lived in Philly.

    Diet Coke
    Philosophy 3-in-1s

Garden of Eatin’ (blue corn chips, yum)
    Levengers (pen paraphernalia)
    Walther (great ergonomics)
    Pelican (outstanding cases and lights)and
    Kershaw (knives that work)

  49. -chipotle for sure. i heard that if you get a chipotle tattoo, they give you free burritos for life. then i called and asked. a man said that it was not company policy, but that he would give me a burrito anyway. alas, i chickened out.
-cheez-its. cheese nips and gold fish are gross.
    -diet coke mmmm.
-starbucks. not just because i work there. i’ve given the coffee bean three tries now and i give up.
-in and out burger. the only fast food burgers i eat.
    -arizona green tea
    -underwear from urban outfitters
    -aveeno shaving cream

  50. you need to try method home products. they have no toxic vapors or cleaning agents (one bottle of detergent clearly states that if you swallow it, you can dilute it with water no problem). they clean as well as any product, but i don’t feel like i’m poisoning myself as much :)

also, i bow down shamelessly to converse and apple.

  51. MOXIE! (no New Englanders on here apparently)
    Volkswagen
    Benchmade knives
..I know I’ll be in the extreme minority on Mental_Floss with this one, but, Ruger Firearms.

  52. Forgot to include DK Eyewitness Guide books, especially travel guides. I love their diagrams and well-organized info.

And Kelly- I second you on the In N Out Burgers!

  53. While so many of my brand obsessions have been mentioned, I will add two more.

–Several people have mentioned Bare Minerals, but I have had better luck with the Jane Iredale brand. Can’t make myself go back to any other, despite the fact it is expensive and a bit harder to find.

–LUSH brand cosmetics. Again, a bit more expensive and harder for me to get–right now I can ONLY get it online–but with the skin issues I have, it is the best for me. I am really in love with several of their solid shampoo bars! If you take good care of them, they seem to last FOREVER.

  54. -Viva paper towels
-Apple (iPod… my glorious MacBook Pro)
    -Burts Bee’s Lip Balm
-Kroger brand chips (yes. I like them better than lays.)
    -Aquafresh Extreme Clean
    -Five gum (the blue one)
    -Bic pens (med. point)
-Facebook (is that a brand? oh well. It’s much better than myspace that’s for sure)
    -Old Navy socks
-My laceless converse with four holes and almost no sole left.. and they aren’t even black anymore. My I love them anyway
    -PUMA running shoes

  55. I am so loyal to Suave products. So cheap, but works the same as expensive stuff.

Also loyal to Sony and Saturn. I’ve never had a bad Sony product. And the people at Saturn are saints (plus, a Saturn saved my life!)

So loyal to Blimpie (are they even around anymore?) that I would go there after working at Subway all day in my Subway clothes. The Blimpie people loved it. Also, the Indian dudes who worked there made it a point to remember customers’ favorite sandwiches. Not kidding. It was surreal. And their subs made Subway taste like dirt.

  56. I used to go to Blimpie every day. It was frickin’ heaven.

  57. - Sony (camera, cell phone and new computer I’ll be purchasing soon)
    - Creative (mp3 player)
    - Jif Extra Crunchy peanut butter
    - Jimmy John’s Sandwiches
    - Bedhead Brunette Goddess shampoo & conditioner
    - Volkswagen (still on my first one, but really think it will become a brand affinity)
    - Hiland chocolate milk
    - Tia Rosa Thin Tortilla Chips
    - Oral B Pulsar toothbrush
    - Degree deodorant
    - Burt’s Bees
And I also share the anti-affinity for Starbucks, so I guess I have an affinity for independent coffee shops.

  58. O.k., if you guys are brand whores I guess that makes me the madam or some kind of uber whore at the very least! I have so many brand loyalties I can’t begin to count them all.

    Lush…awesome!
    Jeep…….I’m on my 5th.
    Coke……..no diet please
    Marlborough light 100’s….in the box

    H&M

John Freida Brilliant Brunette shampoo & conditioner

    Cheerios
    Campbell’s soups
Anna’s Taqueria in Boston & Cambridge. Cheap and oh-so-yummy
Terry Pratchett books–can he be considered a brand?

  61. Diet Dr. Pepper runs through my veins in place of blood.

  62. Andrew, I’m from New Englan, I just find Moxie to be nasty….sorry

  63. Well I couldn’t help but chime in when I saw the photo of the Nintendo controller. We’ve actually had 4 people get MyFreeImplants.com tattooed on their body as a testament to the life changing experience they enjoyed by using our website. It’s an amazing feeling to have that big of an impact on someones life.

Full blog post with photos is available here: myfreeimplants.com/free-breast-implants/?p=604

  64. Porto Rico Imports !!!

I love these folks! They sell fine coffee & teas of the world along with mugs and other coffee/tea paraphenalia.

They are family owned and operated and have been in business since 1907. They have only three locations (all in NYC) but have a website (www.portorico.com) where you can order anything they sell in the stores.

They are the only coffeehouse I know of that sells organic, fair trade, bird-friendly coffees at a reasonable price (about $7/pound).

Call me crazy, but I won’t buy my coffee anywhere else. And for the holidays, I usually buy about 10 pounds to give as gifts.

  65. I like to avoid brand loyalty as a rule, just because it allows me to try new things more often. But of course there are some well tested/high quality brands that have found a way into my daily life no matter what. They have earned a place in my heart.

    Bic lighters
    Zippo lighters
    Camel Cigarettes
    Rhoto V eye drops (AMAZING)
Waters Chromotography products (for the working scientist)
    Express jeans
    Old Spice
    Diet Lipton Green Tea
    Google
    Samsung cell phones
    Windows
    Dunkin Donuts
    Long Trail ale
    Magic Hat
    Camden, NJ Crack-cocaine (just kidding)
    Anything with Teflon/stain resistance

I used to be quite loyal to Nintendo (since NES days), but the gamecube has kept me from getting or even wanting a Wii. I avoild Apple because I think the iPod/iPhone should have a replacable battery and that Apple intentional avoids it so people will buy one every 1-2 years.

  66. My list does make me look like a shameless consumer- maybe I am?

    Trader Joe’s
    Old Navy ($5 tank tops)
    Honda (nearly 40 mpg)
Sony (who else makes purple computers?)
    Starbucks (consistent)
    New Belgium (Fat Tire)
    Taco Bell
    Nordstrom (for shoes)
