These are phenomenal numbers! I thought maybe you’d mention Gary Ridgway (the Green River Serial Killer), who is known for killing at least 40 prostitutes, runaways, and street kids in the Seattle/Tacoma area in the ’70s and ’80s, or Rodney Alcala, whom police suspect may have killed dozens of young women throughout the years and in both New York and L.A. But even with Alcala you’re talking maybe 50 people at most. To kill 500 — to poach a line from Eddie Izzard, you must get up pretty early in the morning to kill that many people.

And let’s not forgot Carl Panzram, born in rural northwestern Minnesota. He sodomized and murdered so many people over many years and many states that I don’t think even HE was sure how many there were total by the time he was hanged. I would nominate him also for the “Meanest Man in America,” judging by, not just the crimes themselves, but things he has said and written about them before he was executed in 1930.

P.S. I agree with Erin – Read “The Devil in the White City” about Holmes! It’s non-fiction but reads like a novel, all about the creation of the 1893′s Columbian Expedition (World’s Fair of Chicago) and that maniac killing people in his bizarre hotel.

The body counts are greatly exagerated i’m sure, these people are definatly monsters i don’t see the need to build up the hype with grossly over-estimated body counts. i’ll bet that between the three of them that greco, lopez and shipman didn’t kill 300 people let alone 300 apiece. regardless,they are still sacks of sh–. it’s hard to believe that lopez is out, i really hope that one of the victim’s family got ahold of him and that’s why he’s missing.

Yay! These people don’t keep track of a guy randomly going to different countries to rape and kill innocent people. I think i will plan my next trip to go kill that sorry son of a bit$#!

There is a great book, The Devil in the WHite City (I think) taht tells all about HH Holmes. It’s a good read about such a crazy guy.

Holmes and Bathory would make excellent horror movies if they haven’t already been made. The scariest horror movies are the ones with truth behind them and to think people actually put so much effort into torturing and killing others boggles the mind. Great article

In reference to H.H. Holmes, It wasn’t that he would “fire employees after two weeks to avoid paying them”, but that those employees were contractors doing piecemeal work on his house of horrors, and he didn’t want any of them to catch on to his master plan. After all, you don’t want the guy building your windowless brick room to find out that said room will be fitted with a human-size furnace, do you?

I was shocked when I saw how short the prison terms were as well — but i’m betting the conditions in those prisons weren’t posh by any means… which is somewhat satisfying of a thought after reading all those horrors.
