The Bullwer-Lytton Fiction Contest annually honors the worst first line to a novel. It's named after English novelist Edward George Bullwer-Lytton, who gave us the famous line "It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness." Of the pairs below, only one line actually won the Bullwer-Lytton contest; the other was made up by me. Can you distinguish the writing world's worst first lines from the ones that are just plain bad? Choose the line that won the Bullwer-Lytton contest.
