Speaking of strange art happenings, I saw this on CNN, and was kind of amazed/disturbed. Apparently, 23 Adolf Hitler artworks (including 21 watercolors) were auctioned off yesterday for a total of approximately $220,000. The CNN photo gallery is pretty interesting because it showcases reaction from both sides (people who are rightly outraged by the event, and people who see the works simply as historical artifacts). I don't know about you guys, but I'm a compulsive doodler. Even when I'm listening at meetings, my pen has to be drawing something. My napkins at bars are always scrawled with horrible sketches. Years ago, I went to go see Spike Lee talk about his then-new movie Bamboozled at a campus forum, and I was stunned to hear about how he had planned on using animation in the film. While I have yet to see the movie (and I think there is a section in the film full of outrageously racist clips that were once aired on mainstream television), he talked about trying to get the rights to use a number of popular cartoons in his flick. I'm not sure what the advantage to owning a guitar created out of a gun is (perhaps people will show more respect the next time you launch into your famous set of ABBA covers?), but the "Escopetarras" are apparently a big hit in Colombia. The brainchild of Cesar Lopez, the gun/guitar idea came to him while standing outside a bombed Colombian social club.
