April 4, 2007 Q: Are there any instances of inbreeding in the Bible?

A: You might not be aware of it, but there’s some pretty racy tales in that Bible you see people thump and thumb-through. Genesis 19, for instance, tells the story of Lot, the one man who – along with his daughters – was allowed to survive when His Holiness decided to clean house in Sodom. Because God recognized that Lot was a righteous man, he was able to hide out with his daughters in a cave somewhere in the wilderness near the Dead Sea. When they finally emerged and realized there was no one around, they assumed they were the last people left on earth. So what are a few aspiring mothers to do? That’s right – get their father drunk and have their way with him. It’s actually in there! According to the Bible, the previously righteous Lot became his own son-in-law as well as his two sons’ father, grandfather, and uncle all at the same time (perhaps only M. C. Escher could draw the family tree.). In the end, things actually turned out pretty all right. Lot’s sons grew up to be the ancestors of the Moabites and Ammonites, two very powerful tribes of the highland region east of the Jordan River. Not a bad turn-out for an ancestry of inbreeds.
