Who put lasers in my computer?

According to CNN.com, Intel has just created a silicon-based chip that can shoot lasers?! It's true. The chip is considered a breakthrough because instead of using wires to send and receive data, it uses tiny, laser beamed lights to perform the same operations. But what's the effect of such an innovation? The optical lasers should drastically cut the costs of computers, reduce their sizes, and increase their speeds. Of course, the laser-fitted chips won't hit the market for another 4-5 years so don't go asking Santa for it just yet.
