How Did You Know Jimmy Luth?
We had a lot of fun giving away daily neatorama prizes this month! We hope you enjoyed the new aspect of the game. We're taking all your feedback into consideration for the next hunt, so thanks for being active on the Facebook page. Head over there to find out if you're a random winner, as we'll be pulling that later today. Meantime, congrats to our first place winner, Jimmy Luth! Let's meet him now:
I live in Alpharetta, Georgia with my wife of seven years, Laurie, who is always forgiving when I dig into my computer for a week every month as I search out answers (and she occasionally helps me too). I am big on trivia and mental_floss gives me my daily fix on learning something random and testing me. I work as an IT Business Analyst/PMP for Recall, Information Management. Pictured is my four year old, Annabelle, (as Princess Tiana) who took an extra long bath without complaint as I worked out the final puzzle; and my one year old, Rebecca, who slept through it all. I don't believe I have missed a HDYK in all it's various formats since the beginning but definitely haven't in 2010. I have often felt close to the top prize but was sure it couldn't happen this month as I submitted 27 minutes after go-live and had to do the final puzzle twice before finding the correct answer. An additional thanks to Fran Weigand on Day 2 who helped me confirm my suspicion
What 1996 movie won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects? Independence Day
-Jefferson Airplane Album
-Up in the Air
-Airplane II: The Sequel
Jefferson Airplane is a music album, all others are movie posters.

HDYK: Knew a lot about that album and the tricks of it.
..I don't want to wait until 8:00..
Math.....That's not trivial.
HDYK: Searched law of cosines and figured proper formula. The third angle is X+66+26 = 180 degrees. X = 88 degrees. BC = 650 miles; AB = 600 miles. BC = (c^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2abcosX) = 600^2 + 650^2 ----- Quit trying to use wiki formulas and found an auto calculator at http://www.analyzemath.com/Geometry_calculators/cosine_law_calculator.html
Question: The classic movie, Airplane turns 30 years old this week. On what film is the movie based?
HDYK: I honestly thought Airport but everyone says Zero Hour. I am going to go check that. Wiki confirms!
Grover (Cleveland), Franklin (Roosevelt), Ronald (Reagan) McDonald, Thomas (Jefferson), George (Washington) Jetson, Jimmy (Carter) Neutron, Calvin (Coolidge)
Answers: They share first names with presidents as listed. Jimmy Neutron is voiced by a female.
HDYK: Knew all but Franklin by looking. Seeing Franklin's name triggered the presidential link.
Main Word: PRESIDENT
New Word: REALED = LEADER
HDYK: Guessed President was word and worked down each side. Only had to search for help on 1 word. (Leap). Debated your number 6 on ER or OR if the true answer should be Ordeal. I got some facebook help. (Thanks to helpers)
LETTERS - EOMNARC = CAMERON = UNITED KINGDOM = GBR
HDYK: Used G20 list on wiki to determine best fits for names. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_G-20_Toronto_summit

Someone mentioned the archives on MF and I found some possibly secret hdyk areas that helped with pictures (hydk17/mashup.html)..okay..found another page using the mentalfloss archive search (searching Goldblum). Definitely not where I should have been but it worked for me (and being honest). Still had to search to identify the movies.
