Names You Almost Gave Your Pets

Jason English

Every Friday, I post a series of unrelated questions meant to spark conversation in the comments. Answer one, answer all, respond to someone else's reply, whatever you want. On to this week's topics of discussion...

1. Overheard in Starbucks yesterday: "I really wanted to name him Providence, but we settled on Arthur." (I didn't stick around to find out whether Arthur was her puppy or her son.) What's a creative name you almost gave a pet (or child) before settling on something else?

2. A couple weeks ago, Scott Allen's piece on regional soft drinks inspired a ton of comments. But how about other kinds of regional delicacies? What restaurants or foods that are only available in your part of the country would you most miss if you moved?

3. Every driver locks his or her keys in the car at least once. (If you're thinking, "Not me! I never did that!"—just wait.) If this happened to you at an especially inopportune time, we want to hear the story.

4. Let's pretend you're embarking on a cross-country journey tomorrow, but you can only bring one CD—your iPod is broken and you really packed a lot of stuff. Also, your radio is on the fritz. What album do you think you could listen to, on repeat, for 3,000 miles?

Bonus Question: Where does the phrase "on the fritz" come from?

Have a great weekend!
