The World's Oldest Animals

Can you imagine owning a goldfish that lived to be over 43 years old? Peter Hand won Tish when he was seven years old and ended up having the fish until he was 50, making the goldfish the oldest recorded animal of its species.

If you think that's impressive, just consider Hanako, a koi fish that was living in Japan from 1751 to 1977—that's a total of 226 years. Because koi scales can be used to estimate the age of an individual, scientists examined Hanako after her death and found that the temple where she was born had kept accurate records and that the amazing koi did live over two centuries.
