In honor of April Fool’s Day, Gawker has put together an entertaining post on Alan Abel, often referred to as the world’s greatest hoaxer.
Among Abel's legendary pranks was his creation of the fictitious Society for Indecency to Naked Animals (SINA), whose mission was to provide clothing to all of the animals of the world, so as to relieve them of the shame they feel due to living a life in the nude. Rather than being quickly called out for the obvious farce it was, the SINA movement endured – and even gathered followers – for nearly 5 years before being debunked.
Abel’s later pranks included orchestrating a mass fainting on the Donahue show, attempting to sell a kidney, and launching a public campaign against breastfeeding.
Check out the Gawker article for much more detail on all of his hi-jinx.
