The Weirdest Weapons of the Allies

Jill Harness

During World War II, it seems that the Allies were willing to experiment with just about anything that could potentially help them win the war. Including a stink bomb. That idea was canned after researchers couldn't keep the person using the weapon from getting sprayed by it.

Another utterly bizarre—although entirely effective—idea was to disguise the corpse of a homeless man (pictured) as a high-ranking Royal Marines officer, with a briefcase full of fake top-secret files attached to his wrist. The files indicated the Allies would invade Sardinia instead of Sicily, causing the Germans to pull troops out of Sicily just before the Allies hit Sicily's shores. More on the possible identity of that homeless man can be found here and here.
