The Southern white rhino is so rare these days that in the African nature parks where they live, each animal is assigned its own armed guard to protect it against poachers.

Not everything in this fascinating Environmental Graffiti article on rhinos is that depressing. Did you know the black rhino's prehensile upper lip can open gates and vehicle doors as well as pick a small leaf off a small twig? Well, now you do.
