The Fictional World of George Orwell's 1984
By Randy Olson
Today's map shows the fictitious world of George Orwell's 1984, depicting the three totalitarian super-states and the territory they're fighting over. Reddit user dr_van_nostrand_MD made this observation: "[This map is] fictitious in the sense that George Orwell made it up, but it's also fictitious in the sense that it could have been just another lie that the government created. For all we know the UK in 1984 could be like North Korea today; just a small isolated state that has effectively brainwashed their population."
The Afternoon Map is a new semi-regular feature in which we post maps and infographics. In the afternoon. Semi-regularly. Today's map comes from Wikipedia's entry for 1984.
