Paid Maternity Leave Around the World

Today's map comes from World Policy Forum and looks at how different countries handle maternity leave. According to a report from the International Labour Organization, only three countries don't offer paid maternity leave: Oman, Papua New Guinea, and the United States (see page 16).

The ILO had no data on Suriname, which is that red spot in South America. As for the U.S., there are a handful of states that offer some paid leave, including New York, New Jersey, California, Hawaii, and Rhode Island. Also, Poland has increased benefits.

You can dig into that ILO report for a look at how each country handles maternity leave and benefits.

The Afternoon Map is a semi-regular feature in which we post maps and infographics. In the afternoon. Semi-regularly. Thanks to Conrad Hackett of Pew Research for sharing this one.
