Tips For Staying Awake and Alert That Don't Involve Caffeine

Hannah Keyser

It's the afternoon slump and you've already had your daily cup of coffee (or two). If you go for another shot of caffeine now, you'll risk messing up your sleep schedule and continuing your never-ending cycle of exhaustion. What to do instead? The American Chemical Society put together this video of four different tricks to try when you need a quick boost of energy.

First, make sure you stay hydrated. Grab a water bottle before you start to feel thirsty because as little as a 1 percent dip in your hydration level can affect your focus. If you've been stuck at your desk all day, head out for a quick walk—both exercise and bright, natural light are proven energy-boosters. And if all of that still leaves you dragging, cue up the cute cat (or dog) videos: A recent study showed how viewing cat videos online improves one's mood and ability to focus. Tell that to your boss.
