Watch an Intense Friction Drill Melt Metal

Rebecca OConnell

This impressive drill, made by ARVADEST, does more than just forge holes. While digging into pieces of metal, the tool also begins to melt the surface. As a result, the drill creates automatic rings around the holes. "Basically, you create your own inserts," ARVADEST writes on their YouTube page. "Drilling holes in many materials using a Formdrill tool is a productive process to create strong threaded connections. By forming with friction [energy], a hole is created and the wall thickness is increased." The carbide drill runs at about 2.500 rpm.
