The Earthships of Taos

Outside of Taos, New Mexico, a community of people live off the grid in homes made partly out of garbage. Architect Michael Reynolds coined the term "Earthship" for the homes, which use materials like beer cans and used tires to create passive solar, off-the-grid housing. Reynolds doesn't recycle the materials per se; instead, he reuses them as-is. The resulting houses seem homey and efficient.
