The ins-and-outs of life here on Earth—news events, elections, and even that much-needed journey to the post office—can seem pretty important. That is, until you get a little perspective.

This video from Business Insider shows “The History of the Earth” as mapped onto the United States. It begins in Los Angeles, some 4.54 billion years ago when the Earth was formed, and stretches over Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, and beyond, marking major events like formation of the first rocks and the emergence of multicellular organisms. It’s worth watching to get the full experience, but here’s a teaser: Hominins don’t show up until the timeline reaches New Jersey.
