The winter may be brutal or mild where you are, but chances are you're not spending it locked in sea ice. In 2015, a team of researchers tethered their ship to an ice floe for five months. This allowed them the benefit of recreation—playing soccer on the ice—at the expense of being supremely isolated and cold all the time.
