This Smart Sprinkler System Studies the Weather to Conserve Water

Lawn irrigation systems are favored over hand watering because they make life easier, but standard sprinkler systems are not without their flaws. The Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller (Generation 2) is a device that aims to fix some of those by connecting your sprinklers to your smartphone. The system can be turned on or off from anywhere, but that's not even the coolest feature. As WIRED reports, the Internet-connected device also uses local weather forecasts to adjust watering schedules based on your lawn's individual needs, conserving water and saving you money.
The device replaces standard sprinkler controllers, and the installation process only takes half an hour, according to Rachio. Once it's set up, you simply connect it to your home's Wi-Fi. The system works with Android, iOS, and standard computers. There are 16 programmable zones, giving home owners more control over where the water goes and how much of it is used. Improving on the original design, Rachio made the new controller smaller and easier to set up, added sensor ports and custom outdoor enclosure options. Another feature that was not included in the first generation of the product is the ability to control the system with Nest Partner and Amazon Echo units.
The Rachio Smart Sprinkler Control Generation 2 is available now via Amazon. Head to the company's website to learn more about the product's features and design.
