Kaleidoscopes may produce spectacular and dazzling images, but their construction is surprisingly simple. Behind the sparkling, dreamlike patterns we see when we peer into a kaleidoscope are a couple of mirrors, a handful of beads, bits of shiny glass, and a little bit of glue.

In the short video above, YouTube channel How Its Made reveals step-by-step how professional kaleidoscope makers construct the classic toys. The video also provides a bit of background on the toy, telling the story of its invention, and explaining how a few simple mirror tricks produce such magical images.
