When it comes to record players, there’s isn’t much point in trying to reinvent the wheel. You can, however, reinvent how it spins.

Chicago-based company Gramovox has created the Floating Record Vertical Turntable, a record player that spins LPs in an upright position. The device allows you to see a record in all its glory as it pumps out your favorite tunes. According to Gramovox, this vertigo-inducing setup won't result in any loss of sound quality.

Born out of a successful Kickstarter campaign, the turntable has built-in speakers and is designed to be a more compact, space-saving alternative to traditional record players. As Gramovox's website states: “We wanted to create a visceral vinyl experience that showcased the record as both art and a medium to produce analog sound. The result is a high-performance turntable that plays your records vertically—producing the illusion that it’s floating.”

For a closer look at this newfangled record player, check out the unboxing and review video below from YouTuber Techmoan. As he notes, the vertical turntable is not technically the first of its kind, but it’s the best execution of an idea that turns an old idea on its figurative head and literal side.
